12 Shows Like Cobra Kai That You Should Check Out
By LUKE Y. THOMPSON
1. Ash vs. Evil Dead
Ash Williams is sexist, arrogant, delusional, and stuck in the past; basically, he is Johnny Lawrence, except that he has always been perceived as a good guy. Also, Ash and Johnny both have issues with father figures played by TV stars of yore, and against all odds, both men end up being father figures to at least two younger protegees.
2. Chucky
When it comes to TV shows that are sequels to '80s movies with many of the original cast involved, only "Chucky" is a more bugnuts insane expansion of its initial premise than "Cobra Kai." "Chucky" takes the simple slasher story of a killer doll and adds endless complications and expansions and a surprisingly sweet love story at the center to deliver a fun watch.
3. Batman Beyond
"Batman Beyond" has a premise quite similar to "Cobra Kai" — an elderly Bruce Wayne becomes a mentor to young Terry McGinnis and trains him to take on all the young jokers. Like "Cobra Kai," it also draws on the love fans felt for a previous iteration of the franchise and brings back Kevin Conroy (R.I.P.) as Bruce, while the original Joker also makes an appearance.
4. AEW Dynamite
Like "Cobra Kai," All-Elite Wrestling understands that the story works best if it gives equal time to rising young talent alongside veteran competitors. That's probably why Chris Jericho in "Dynamite" forms an "appreciation society" of newcomers to mold in his image, an act similar to Johnny's resurrection of the karate dojo in "Cobra Kai."
5. The Karate Kid
"The Karate Kid" animated series is not considered canon to the so-called Miyagi-verse. Nonetheless, any fan of "Cobra Kai" and the "Karate Kid" movies will not have a complete picture without these '80s cartoon adventures of Daniel and Miyagi traveling the world with new female companion Taki.
