12 Absurd Simpsons Predictions That Actually Came True
By JOE GARZA
Voting machine
In "Treehouse of Horror XIX," Homer tries to vote for Barack Obama on Election Day 2008, but a digital voting machine keeps changing his vote to John McCain. This scene is reminiscent of a real-life incident during the 2012 presidential election when a voting machine kept changing a person's vote from Obama to Mitt Romney.
Presidency
A future version of Lisa is president of the United States in "Bart to the Future" and mentions to her White House staff a budget crisis inherited from President Trump. What seemed like a throwaway gag in 2000 became a reality in 2016 when billionaire and reality TV star Donald Trump became president of the United States.
Censoring David
Marge leads a successful campaign to tone down the violence in "Itchy & Scratchy," but the group she started later targets Michelangelo's "David" for its nudity. A similar incident occurred in 2016 in Russia when organizers considered clothing a replica of the statue, with a resident complaining about its placement near a school and church.
Disney and Fox
In a 1998 episode, Homer mingles with Hollywood A-listers, including Ron Howard, who in a later scene has a meeting at 20th Century Fox, where a sign out front reveals that the studio is a division of the Walt Disney Co. In 2019, the two companies actually merged, making not only Fox but "The Simpsons" a Disney property.
Curling domination
In 2010's "Boy Meets Curl," Homer and Marge become successful curling partners and represent the U.S. in the Winter Olympics to win the gold medal by beating Sweden. In the 2018 Winter Olympics, the U.S. men's curling team actually beat Sweden to win its first-ever gold medal in the sport.
