'Paranormal Activity 2' To Get IMAX Release

Quick, what's the film that seems least suited for an IMAX release? If you thought Paranormal Activity 2, then you and I are on the same page. And yet Paramount's sequel to the low-fi horror hit will now hit the nation's largest screens.

Here's a statement from IMAX about the release:

"Paramount has delivered another great movie that we believe will really resonate with IMAX fans," said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. "The growth of our digital theatre network has allowed us greater flexibility in programming, and we're very pleased to bring this highly anticipated sequel to the ever-increasing IMAX audience.""We are thrilled to partner with Paramount Pictures for Paranormal Activity 2, a film that will be a terrifying treat for IMAX audiences," said Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "We look forward to sharing the next installment of this highly anticipated movie for a limited two-week run that includes the Halloween weekend."

In other words: a whole lot of people turned out for the first film, and we think those audiences will show up again for the sequel, and consequently make us a lot of money. Which is fair.

But as an audience member, IMAX seems like overkill for this film. What we've seen so far suggests that the second film follows the basic aesthetic of the first, and blowing that rough image up to IMAX size is a pretty silly idea. Granted, the first film didn't work for me at all (annoying 'characters' + a quickly predictable pattern of scare tactics) but I don't think it would have been improved by being blown up to IMAX size.

So what about it? Is IMAX the way you'd like to see Paranormal Activity 2?
