'Orange Is The New Black' Season 5 Trailer: Justice Is Served

The heartbreaking events of Orange is the New Black's season four finale loom large in season 5, and thanks to a brand new trailer, it looks like this entire upcoming season is going to be addressing the fallout of that main character death. Grab your jumpsuits, because it's almost time to head back to the Litchfield Correctional Facility.

Orange is the New Black season 5 trailer

Our previous look at the upcoming season concentrated on whether or not Daya pulls the trigger and shoots a guard during a riot in the wake of Poussey's death, but this new trailer isn't interested in answering that question. Instead, we get a much larger glimpse into what happens when the inmates seemingly take over the prison (as evidenced by Big Boo's slick suit and inmate Leanne donning a guard's outfit).

Unity seems to be a major theme this season, and there's some rousing speeches and a nice speech or two here, but unity has never been a strong suit for these ladies, whose factions have often butted heads in the past. Can they finally join together to serve a cause larger than themselves: #justiceforpoussey?

The show realized a couple of years ago that Piper Chapman, its ostensible protagonist, is one of the least interesting characters in Litchfield, and there's even a joke at her expense that could be read as a meta commentary on the audience's reaction to her. ("People ain't gonna like you." "Story of my life.") The good news is that Piper is essentially the only dud character in the whole series. Taylor Schilling is solid, but the rest of the cast is able to operate on a whole different level, largely thanks to outstanding writing. I can't wait to see what happens when all of these different personalities have to come up with a unified stance on taking over the prison.

Unlike previous seasons, which have been a bit more expansive with the time period they cover, all thirteen episodes of season 5 will span just three days of time on the show. That's the first time the series has switched up its format, and might be exactly what it needs to keep from feeling stale as it enters its fifth season. We know it's coming back for at least two more seasons after the new one, so here's hoping showrunner Jenji Kohan and her team have a plan to keep this one of the most diverse, vital, and fascinating shows on television.

Orange is the New Black season 5 premieres on Netflix on June 9, 2017.
