Lars Von Trier May Still Release 5 1/2 Cut Of 'Nymphomaniac'; See Two More Posters

Last week, producer Peter Aalbaek Jensen revealed that the cut of Nymphomaniac that'd make it to Danish theaters wouldn't be the one Lars von Trier wanted to make. His director's cut was a butt-numbing 5 1/2 hours long, prompting distributors to whittle it down to a more marketable four hours.

However, Jensen now adds that the longer version could find a release after all, if von Trier really wants it to. It'll just have to go through alternate routes. Hit the jump to read his explanation, and to check out two more steamy posters.

It does exist, a version that's 5 1/2 hours long, and it contains deeply explicit scenes, but it's not yet finished and cannot be projected in normal conditions. Moreover, nobody in our camp has seen it. Like many other distributors worldwide, we signed right from the beginning for a 4 hour version and that's the one we decided to release in two parts, the first on January 1st and the other on January 29th [in France]. After that, it belongs entirely to Lars Von Trier to show his personal version, why not in a large festival or in a DVD or Blu-ray Collector's Edition?

The original report suggested that von Trier was willing but not necessarily happy to give up the final cut. Insiders claimed the director hadn't even seen the four-hour version, and Jensen said, "The short version is against Lars' own will, but he accepts it because he understands market mechanisms." So it's encouraging to hear that von Trier may yet get a chance to show us his personal vision, even if the regular theatrical version isn't it.

U.S. distributor Magnolia has not stated which edit will screen in American theaters, but it'll likely be the shorter one. And it may be blurrier than the one shown in Denmark. While Jensen says that the edits were "purely for commercial reasons" and not to excise the hardcore material, distributors in different countries will be able to blur the explicit scenes as they see fit.

While we wait to see what von Trier decides what to do with his cut, take a peek at two more orgasmic posters below. One zooms in on Charlotte Gainsbourg's sex face, while the other zooms out to show the rest of the main cast including Shia LaBeoufConnie Nielsen, Stellan Skarsgard, Jamie Bell, Stacy Martin, Christian Slater, Uma Thurman, and Willem Dafoe.
