New Blu-ray Releases Glass

Physical media will live forever! That’s what I keep telling myself every night as I cry myself to sleep. For now, at least, physical media is sticking around, and that’s where this column comes in – rounding up the Blu-ray releases you might want to check out, while Blu-rays still exist. This week, we have the confusing conclusion to M. Night Shyamalan’s superhero trilogy; a charming Amblin-esque throwback from the director of Attack the Block; Keanu Reeves playing God; a crime-thriller guaranteed to piss some people off; and some wicked witchcraft. In addition to all that, her about the outrageously complicated “Escape Room in a Box” I was sent to promote the upcoming Blu-ray release of Escape Room. These are the new Blu-ray releases and their special features you should check out this week and beyond.

Star Wars 4K Blu-ray Box Set

A new rumor has surfaced suggesting Disney is working on a Star Wars 4K Blu-ray box set of the entire Skywalker Saga. The three prequel films, the three original Star Wars films to hit theaters, and the latest trilogy, will all be packaged together in one giant box set. The rumor states that the set will feature 4K scans of the original negatives, which suggests we might be getting the original versions of the original trilogy, not just the special editions with the additional special effects. Fingers crossed.

Brick Blu-ray

Believe it or not, Rian Johnson‘s debut feature Brick has never been released on Blu-ray in America (only in Canada, America’s hat). That’s about to change. Kino Lorber Studio Classics will be releasing Johnson’s high school noir film on Blu-ray in May, and it’s going to be loaded with extras. The 2005 film took hard boiled detective tropes (and dialogue) and dropped them into a modern-day high school setting, with incredible results. More on the Brick Blu-ray below.

The Abyss Blu-ray

James Cameron‘s The Abyss has been a long sought after item for Blu-ray collectors. While the 1989 sci-fi action film was released on DVD, it has yet to find its way to Blu-ray. But that might be about to change. Skip Kimball, someone who has worked in the editorial department on Cameron-related films Avatar and Alita: Battle Angel, just revealed what might be the 4K remastering of The Abyss. Fingers crossed this isn’t a huge prank.

New Blu-ray Releases Creed II

Last month, Samsung announced they would no longer produce Blu-ray players. It gave physical media fans – like me, and presumably you, if you’re reading this column – pause. The reasoning could be because Samsung’s 4K technology has been subpar in compared to others. Or it could spell the beginning of the end – a sign that Blu-ray will soon go the way of VHS. It’s not a pleasant thought. For now, Blu-ray is here, and I can only hope it’s here to stay. For now, let’s treasure it while it’s still around. And what better way to do that than by reading a few thousand words I’ve cobbled together on the latest new releases? These are the new Blu-ray releases and their special features you should check out this week and beyond.

alien 4k blu-ray

Alien has been released on Blu-ray approximately 400 times, but here comes a new one anyway! To mark the 40th anniversary of Ridley Scott‘s horror/sci-fi classic, an Alien 4K Blu-ray will find its way to shelves in April. Even if you already own one of the many previous releases, it might be worth upgrading for the new 4K transfer.

And that’s not all the Alien related news we have! Thanks to creature designer Carlos Huantes, we now know that Noomi Rapace‘s character had a much bigger part in early drafts of Alien: Covenant.

Glass Blu-ray

Glass, the conclusion to M. Night Shyamalan‘s trilogy that started with Unbreakable and continued with Split, underwhelmed critics, but that didn’t keep audiences away. The movie was a huge hit, and now the Glass Blu-ray is headed our way. Glass will be available on Digital, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD and On Demand in April, and the release will be loaded with over an hour of special features.
