One of the things I’ve learned over the past year is that interviewing celebrities is hard. Interviewing writers and directors is much easier. Stars, for the most part are charismatic but empty, while writers, directors, and talented actors have much more to bring to the conversation. One thing’s for sure, I’ve never, NEVER showed up to an interview unprepared. Even at the huge press junket where 15 people are cattled in-front of roundtables full of journalists in rapid succession, some of which who you would never recognize and hold highly technical jobs, I still would never speak up unless I was 100% sure that I knew what I was talking about.
And while this interview clip featuring John Cusack is hilarious, I’ve seen this thing happen all to often at some of the junkets. At a roundtable for Juno, some Canadian journalist asked director Jason Reitman how his father (Ivan) liked directing an episode of The Office. But Ivan never directed an episode of The Office, but his friend and Ghostbusters co-star Harold Ramis had. And sometimes in moments like these it takes the interviewee a couple minutes to sift through the nonsensical question. Watch similar situation hit the fan after the jump as a woman interviewing John Cusack tells him he starred in American Beauty. Only Problem… yes, you guessed it!
