Following her breakthrough performance in True Grit, the future looked promising for young actress Hailee Steinfeld. Since then, she’s taken on a variety of roles ranging from the likes of satisfactory films such as Begin Again and Ender’s Game to more disappointing projects such as Three Days to Kill and Barely Lethal. But she really got a chance to show a different side to herself in Pitch Perfect 2. Now it appears we’ll get to see Steinfeld blossom into a more mature actress.
In what could serve as the spark towards a career that resembles something like the career of Chloe Grace Moretz or Elle Fanning, we have The Edge of Seventeen trailer. The film is produced by James L. Brooks, the producer of films such as Jerry Maguire and the writer/director of Broadcast News, Terms of Endearment and As Good As It Gets, and it looks like an outstanding coming of age story.

This could be another sort of breakthrough role for Hailee Steinfeld as she’s starting to take on more adult roles as she comes up on her 20th birthday later this year. She’s the kind of actress who could stick around this business for awhile, and she has the ability to move in and out of drama and comedy seamlessly, making her quite a talent.
Even though it’s a longer trailer clocking in at nearly four minutes, it does tell us exactly what this movie is going to be like. It has all the ups and downs, comedy and drama, and genuine storytelling that have made almost all the movies James L. Brooks has produced stand out. As a testament to how well-crafted these character seem in this trailer alone, I was certain that this movie was based on a bestselling book. But it’s an original screenplay from debut director Kelly Fremon, and hopefully it lives up to the quality movie being pitched in this trailer.
Normally when the bumpers for a trailer credit a production company with a stream of movies to lend credibility to their latest release, it feels desperate. But the line-up that Gracie Films has produced before this is fantastic, and The Edge of Seventeen looks to fit among their ranks splendidly.
Everyone knows that growing up is hard, and life is no easier for high school junior Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld), who is already at peak awkwardness when her all-star older brother Darian (Blake Jenner) starts dating her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson). All at once, Nadine feels more alone than ever, until the unexpected friendship of a thoughtful boy (Hayden Szeto) gives her a glimmer of hope that things just might not be so terrible after all.
