Spidey isn’t just returning to the big screen next year, he’s returning to the biggest screens in the world. Sony announced today that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be released internationally in IMAX 3D next year, just as the previous film was.
But before he lands on screens around the world, he’s got plans to swing by his hometown. As the “Official Super Hero of Times Square 2014” (whatever that is), Spider-Man will drop in on the annual ball drop in New York City, bringing some new footage along with him. Get all the details on the movie’s release and Spider-Man’s Times Square gig after the jump.
Sony revealed their The Amazing Spider-Man 2 release plans in a press release today. The picture will be digitally re-mastered into the IMAX 3D format, and will roll out internationally starting April 16, 2014 and domestically on May 2, 2014. Of course, for those who like their movies smaller and flatter (and cheaper), it’ll also open in conventional 2D on the same date.
That means we’ve got a few months to wait still, but Sony’s happy to dole out a little more footage between now and then. The studio will reveal new scenes this New Year’s Eve on the Times Square video screens. It seems a fitting location to reveal new The Amazing Spider-Man 2 footage. Not only is Spidey from the Big Apple, the film itself was shot entirely on location in the city.
Marc Webb directed the superhero sequel, which stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, and Dane DeHaan. Here’s the official synopsis:
We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.
It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.
