Terminator Genisys Not A Sequel Or Remake; MoCap Endoskeletons; PG-13 Rating Likely

We don't really know too much about the new Terminator movie Terminator Genisys, which features franchise star Arnold Schwarzenegger reprising his franchise role as The Terminator, alongside Emilia Clarke as Sarah Conner, Jason Clarke as John Conner and Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese – the three points of a family triangle first outlined in James Cameron's original Terminator. J.K. Simmons recently revealed that the new film, is actually a love story, which further pushes the rumors that the film is both a sequel and a reboot.

Courtney has recently been making the press rounds and has revealed a bunch of information about the upcoming film, claiming its not a reboot or a sequel, talking about the performance capture endoskeletons and admitting the movie will likely be rated PG-13 (both of which won't please fans of the franchise). Jai Courtney, who appeared as John McClane's son in the last Die Hard film A Good Day To Die Hard, recently talked to a bunch of news outlets, and revealed a bunch of new details. First up, The Arnold Fans asked a bunch of questions, most interestingly, if he thought the movie was Rated R or not. Here is Jai Courtney's response:

"I would love to see it be rated R, but I don't think it will. I think in this day & age, it's much more likely to be PG-13. There were no f-bombs. But there'll be a healthy amount of movie violence."

Of course, the MPAA has not yet rated the film, which is currently being edited — so you never know. But Courtney plays on of the film's three leads and you'd think that he would have a good sense of the rating from being on set for almost the entire shoot.

The first three films of the Terminator franchise were rated R and many fans were upset that the fourth film, McG's Terminator Salvation, was "neutered" into a PG-13 rating. And now one of the film's stars reveals more and relays the sad but obvious news: the film will very likely be rated PG-13.  So likely another loss in the franchise sequel PG13/R battle, and I'm sure that will annoy many fans of the series. Courtney also revealed some other tidbits:

The endoskeletons were shot using motion capture, not using practical puppets like earlier films: "the endoskeletons were funny, because they were really just guys in mo-cap suits running around."

On shooting the sequels: "I think the plan is do the next 2 back to back in 2016.""

Elsewhere, Courtney told HuffPost the following bits about the upcoming film:

 "It's a big movie in scale and scope."

"We're telling a really really interesting story." mirroring what JK Simmons said previously ("It's a really interesting script.")

"We start in a place we're familiar with from the early films and then circumstances change. It somewhat shifts the course of events from that point."

"It's not necessarily a sequel or a reboot. I don't even know how you brand it correctly. We're not remaking one of the early 'Terminator' movies. And it doesn't necessarily carry on from the point where we left off."

The film is directed by Game of Thrones/Thor: The Dark World helmer Alan Taylor and stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, Jason Clarke, Matt Smith, Byung-Hun Lee, and JK Simmons. Terminator Genisys will hit theaters on July 1st 2015.
