In a story that’s so crazy it just might be true, a photo reportedly taken in the offices of director James Mangold and placed on Instagram could be our first look at a poster for The Wolverine. Screenrant made the discovery on the picture sharing service (which has now been deleted) and you can check it out after the jump.

Thanks to Screenrant for finding this image.

So, what do you think? Could that possibly be a teaser poster for The Wolverine? As Mangold is still several months away from production on the Hugh Jackman superhero film, it’s likely 20th Century Fox has not started making marketing materials for it but, it’s possible this was something created either by a fan or thrown together for use at an industry event where promotional materials for movies still in production are regularly on display.

That’s all assuming the cover story is true and someone who was in Mangold’s personal office was dumb enough to take a photo of something on the walls. That’s such an obvious breach of trust that, if true, I would imagine it cost someone their job.

Real or fake, though, it’s certainly a strong image for a film still in pre-production. It evokes both the character’s iconic claws as well as the setting of the film in a very simple, clean way. It’s likely not something that would be put out once the film is in production  - Fox is paying good money for Jackman and you can be damn sure he’ll be on the poster – but for an early image, it does the job.

The Wolverine, starring Hugh Jackman, was written by Mark Bomback‘s from an original draft by Christopher McQuarrie. Mangold will direct the one-shot story of a trip to Japan with an eye towards a July 26, 2013 release date.
