In what is shaping up to be a top shelf action comedy, tonight brings news that Aziz Ansari is in negotiations to star in 30 Minutes or Less from Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer. The dapper comedian and co-star of Parks & Rec would play a junior high school teacher thrown into a ticking clock scenario when his pal—an aimless pizza delivery man—is ordered to rob a bank by two goons who strap a bomb to his chest.

Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer is evidently now locked to follow-up his aforementioned hit horror-com with 30 Minutes or Less, a most-likely R-rated comedy about a slacker pizza delivery man facing an explosive ultimatum at the instruction of a pair of goons. It was previously one of several projects being mentioned online for the director, alongside an original buddy cop flick and Mission: Impossible 4. According to Production Weekly, Fleischer will soon jump into production, with a summer start date for shooting in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Anyone who follows Fleischer on Tumblr may have noticed some recent photos he posted from Michigan, specifically from the hell hole known as Detroit, including this personal favorite.

Also in line with previous rumor, Danny McBride is said to be in talks to star as the character Dwayne—which it should be noted is not the pizza slinger, and instead one of the goons who, uh, has some serious daddy issues. More details after the jump, and in addition, a tiny update on, hold on to your dick, Eastbound & Down Season 2. Kenny Powers is officially leaving the States.

Ghostbusters

Could we be seeing Spider-Man, Ghostbusters, District 9 and 2012 in Digital 3D in 2011? Maybe…

Last month it was reported that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment would begin to release 3D movies on Blu-ray for the first time, beginning this summer with the computer animated release Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs (with additional 3D Blu-ray titles expected to also appear this summer).

Bloomberg is now reporting that Sony Pictures might even begin upconverting older catalogue films to 3D, but not for theatrical rerelease, but instead to promote the new digital 3D Blu-ray technology. While no titles have yet to be announced, it is expected that Sony would feature popular catalog titles like Spider-Man, Ghostbusters, Men in Black, Gladiator, and possibly newer blockbuster films like 2012, District 9 and Zombieland.

ZOMBIELAND
The zombie film’s usual affixation to the horror genre has been broken. Even Shaun of the Dead acknowledged the unfortunate realities of a zombie outbreak, and in turn, its latter half yielded numerous intense and teary scenes. Zombieland is the first zombie film to not concern itself with such issues, exclusively embracing the fun side of the apocalypse. There’s an element of wish fulfillment to it, as the young, awkward protagonist finds himself—for the first time ever, and as a direct result of the aforementioned “atrocities”—in a position to lock down some hot poon. And you know, build a meaningful relationship and stuff. Moreover, the characters engage in frequent acts of gift store destruction, mansion plundering, and undead obliteration–all things that, putting aside the likelihood of your whole family being dead and all, would make living in a zombie-infested world pretty damn enjoyable. We may not get to experience the thrill of those experiences for ourselves, but coupled with the film’s energetic and stylish directional flair, it’s a joy to watch.
Available on Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: DVD – Audio commentary with actors Woody Harrelson & Jesse Eisenberg, director Ruben Fleischer, and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, featurettes (“In Search of Zombieland”, “Zombieland is Your Land”), deleted scenes, Visual Effects Progression Scenes, and a Woke Up Dead Episode (“Up and At ‘Em”). Blu-ray – Includes everything on the DVD, as well as a “Beyond the Graveyard” Behind the Scenes Picture-in-Picture Track, and a digital copy of the film.

The Top 10 Trailers of 2009

I usually loathe Top lists.

As the adage says, if you’ve seen one you’ve seen them all. I have been starting to get highway hypnosis with the sameness of a lot of these Best Of lists for films in 2009, so I was emboldened when asked to come up with a Top 10 Trailers list for 2009 as I haven’t seen a lot of people devoting time to stacking which of them they thought performed their duty exceptionally well.

When I cobbled this list together I essentially, and unscientifically, used some of the same criteria that I use every week for my This Week In Trailers column. I wanted to include a wide swath of various genres (foreign, kids, drama, comedy, action) to show representative samples of what can be done within those arenas; thus, a few solid trailers just couldn’t make the cut.

Because these trailers are usually entry points for the films listed below, some of the challenge of this exercise is trying to “unexperience” watching the eventual film and judge these things based on why they moved me to begin with. It was tough separating what I know now versus what I knew then but, as you will see as my #3 choice, they don’t always have to result in great films. Trailers are always trying to separate you with your money or trying to make the best case why they deserve to be experienced so I hope you enjoy the ones I selected below and leave a comment or two for any trailers you think deserve a special mention.

Zombieland 2 and Jackass 3D Confirmed

zombieland_sequels

Last month, Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer mentioned that not only is Sony interested in a sequel, but if they can “crack” the story for a sequel, it will probably be shot in 3D. A few days later, a list of Paramount’s 2010 slate listed another Jackass sequel, Jackass 3D. Variety has now confirmed that both projects are in development. Who is signed? Who isn’t? When will the films go into production? Find out after the jump.
