Following the Oscar-nominated District 9, Neill Blomkamp’s sophomore effort Elysium proved a major disappointment. Even Blomkamp himself knows it, and his recent admission that he “fucked it up” by pressing ahead with a script that “just wasn’t there” seemed like an encouraging step in the right direction.
But acknowledging your mistakes isn’t the same thing as figuring out how to avoid them. Unfortunately, Chappie indicates that, like the childlike protagonist that gives the film its name, Blomkamp still has a lot to learn. Read our full Chappie review after the jump. Read More »

This new Chappie trailer really makes Neill Blomkamp‘s latest film out to look like his own RoboCop. There’s the designer played by Hugh Jackman who is trying to push a new military/police technology, with a design that looks a lot like the ED-209. There’s the advent of a new drone police force, and the one who ends up with a more-human-than-robot consciousness. But is that just an easy sales pitch to hide the film’s true personality? Check out the trailer below and see if you can figure it out. Read More »

Elysium‘s box office performance this past weekend was nothing to get excited about, but evidently that hasn’t slowed Sony’s enthusiasm for director Neill Blomkamp. Sony is once again teaming with Media Rights Capital for Blomkamp’s next, the sci-fi comedy Chappie.
And with that announcement come more details about the movie, which had previously been kept under wraps. Sharlto Copley is set to star, as he has in both of Blomkamp’s features so far, along with Die Antwoord members Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er. Hit the jump to learn more about the plot.

Briefly: District 9 and Elysium writer/director Neill Blomkamp is going three for three with Sharlto Copley. The actor played the lead in Blomkamp’s first feature, and wear’s a villain’s scuzzy beard in his second (seen above). And now he’ll have a role in the director’s third picture, Chappie, which has enigmatically been described as a sci-fi comedy in an unusual setting. EW says Copley will star in Chappie, but otherwise has as little info to go on as the rest of us. Which is to say, next to none.
You might wonder just how strange Chappie will get. We’re still waiting on confirmation that Die Antwoord members Ninja and Yo-landi Vi$$er will be in the film, as reported not long ago in a South African news item. If those two really do end up in the film, we’ll start mental preparations to see Blomkamp’s most eccentric film yet.
