xXx 3 trailer

“Kick some ass, get the girl, try to look dope while you’re doing it.” That’s the advice Augustus Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson) gives spy / extreme sports enthusiast (Vin Diesel) in the new trailer for xXx: Return of Xander Cage, and it’s really the appeal of this entire movie in a nutshell. Sometimes, you just want to watch a movie about a guy who kicks some ass, gets the girl, and tries to look dope while he’s doing it. Whether he succeeds at looking dope, of course, is the question, and that’s up for you to judge. Watch the xXx 3 trailer below.

xxx 3 character posters

How long has it been since you’ve watched the original xXx? Released in 2002 near the dawn of Vin Diesel‘s career as one of our strangest (and most strangely lovable) action stars, it was very much a product of its time, combining ’80s action, ’90s style, and two youthful middle fingers to the James Bond franchise. It was terrible. But it remains a fascinating artifact, a film from a time of great transition that will be studied by action movie scholars as a key moment in…something. We’ll figure out that something at a later date.

My point is that the modern action movie has changed a lot in the past decade and what was pretty rad to the cool kids back in the early ’00s doesn’t fly these days. What’s most interesting about this batch of new character posters for xXx: Return of Xander Cage is that they show off a franchise that may very well have grown with the times.

xXx Return of Xander Cage trailer

I’d say “I can’t believe they made another xXx movie,” but in a year where we’ve gotten sequels for everything from Independence Day: Resurgence to Snow White and the Huntsman, of freaking course they made another xXx movie. After all, Vin Diesel is bigger now than he’s ever been, but even he can’t make another Fast and the Furious movie every year. Why not squeeze him into a different action-adventure in the meantime?

Directed by D.J. Caruso, xXx: Return of Xander Cage brings the extreme-sports-enthusiast-turned-spy out of retirement for a dangerous new assignment. Samuel L. Jackson is back as his handler, Augustus Gibbons, and the supporting cast includes Ruby RoseNina DobrevDonnie YenTony Jaa, and Kris Wu. Watch the first xXx: Return of Xander Cage trailer below.  Read More »

Furious 8 New York City

Fans anxious for some sequels starring Vin Diesel are going to get their fill of them over the next couple years. In addition to returning as the voice of Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 next year, Diesel is also sticking with his signature role in the next installment of the long-running Fast and Furious franchise and a return to his early action role from xXx. And since Marvel does a fine job teasing one of those, Diesel has taken it upon himself to hype up the other two.

Taking to social media this past weekend, Diesel posted a couple updates for fans anxious to know what’s going on with Furious 8, with a slightly different official title now, and xXx 3: The Return of Xander Cage. See what Diesel had to say about both after the jump! Read More »

Tony Jaa in xXx 3

Back in the summer of 2014, Vin Diesel said that he would finally be getting back to the character of Xander Cage from xXx 3 with production heading to the Philippines. But it wasn’t until last fall that the sequel was finally making progress. Disturbia and Eagle Eye helmer D.J. Caruso was named as director, and Samuel L. Jackson was slated to return as Agent Augustus Eugene Gibbons. Now two new cast members have been revealed, and the studio is really going for international appeal.

International action stars Jet Li (Lethal Weapon 4, The One) and Tona Jaa (The Protector, Ong-bak) are reportedly joining the cast along with Indian superstar actress Deepika Padukone. Find out what we know about xXx 3 after the jump! Read More »

As any Vin Diesel fan knows, the best source for updates on any Vin Diesel project is very often Vin Diesel himself. He’s famously active on social media, where he shares updates, announcements, marketing materials, and other juicy tidbits with his fans.

Also on board, apparently, is MMA fighter Conor McGregor.
