Days of Future Past VFX

As Bryan Singer‘s X-Men: Days of Future Past hits digital home distribution and will soon be on Blu-ray and DVD, we’re getting a barrage of behind the scenes featurettes exploring the creation of the film. Fox assumes we’ve all seen the movie, and is now attempting to attract audiences with teasing glimpses of the techniques used to create the film. Know what? It’s working. Here’s a Days of Future Past VFX breakdown from Digital Domain, showing how some of Mystique’s transformations were created, and providing great detail on the development of the baseball stadium used in one big sequence.

In addition we’ve got few other Days of Future Past bits, including a deleted scene with Mystique, and a couple character-specific featurettes focused on Sunspot and Bishop. Read More »

x-men first class

Bryan Singer, Simon Kinberg and the whole team are hard at work in pre-production on X-Men: Apocalypse. Filming starts this April up in Montreal for a summer 2016 release. The film will be set in the ’80s, following the old timeline from the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past with the stars of that movie returning: Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy and more. It’ll be the biggest X-Men movie yet, introducing the character Apocalypse.

In a new interview, Kinberg suggests the new film might be the end of that story. The writer and producer says the creative time is looking at X-Men Apocalypse as the conclusion of a trilogy that started with X-Men: First Class. He also says new characters like Cable, Scarlet Witch and Psylocke could appear, and settles the debate about the series’ timeline and which films X-Men: Days of Future Past wiped out. Quicksilver Days of Future Past

X-Men: Days of Future Past featured old man Wolverine, Sentinel attacks, and a couple of giant battles featuring coordinated X-Men attacks — the sort of stuff we’ve been wanting from an X-Men film for a long time. And still, the best part of the movie was the one we all underestimated. Quicksilver, played by Evan Peters, looked pretty uninspired when we saw mere costume photos. But Peters nailed this version of the character, and his big action sequence is a standout not just in this film, but in the 2014 summer lineup.

Now, a behind the scenes video shows how some of the Quicksilver effects were achieved. More of it was done in-camera than people might realize, and so this is a treat to watch. (Germain mentioned this in Superhero Bits yesterday, but we figured that might not show it off to enough people.)  Read More »

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 director

The summer movie season is officially over and that means its time to wrap up our 2014 Summer Movie Wager. If you are unclear, every year a group of us attempt to predict which films will be the top ten of the summer season. You get points for being as accurate as possible.

Like most summers, 2014 was filled with surprises and familiarity. The biggest surprise? Guardians of the Galaxy. In just four weeks, it outgrossed every other film of the summer including massive hits like Transformers: Age of Extinction, X-Men: Days of the Future Past and more. What wasn’t a surprise? Almost everything else. Of the three contestants (myself, Peter Sciretta and Jeff Cannata) we all got at least 9 of the 10 films in the top ten right. The order was another story and is what finally declared a winner.

Below, check out the final point totals and watch our wrap-up video podcast.  Read More »
