It seems appropriate that the practically ageless Wolverine would be the one constant in Fox’s X-Men franchise. But after over a decade and more than half a dozen films, Hugh Jackman will be saying goodbye to the character in 2017 with the untitled Wolverine spinoff.
Details on the film have been kept under very tight wraps. But now a new rumor suggests Jackman will be able to give the character a nice sendoff by bringing him into the twilight of his life via the Old Man Logan storyline from the comics. There will come a day when Hugh Jackman hangs up his Wolverine claws for the very last time. But that day isn’t coming for another couple of movies. Jackman confirmed in a recent interview that not only is he working “really hard” on a new Wolverine, he’s also been in discussions about X-Men: Apocalypse.

A few weeks ago, Hugh Jackman told press that he was “99.9% sure” that the next Wolverine movie would be his last outing as the (nearly) ageless mutant. But now that the X-Men: Days of Future Past press tour is in full swing, that remaining 0.01% seems to be gaining ground.
Jackman has since backtracked a bit on his comments, saying that he’s “less sure” about wanting to hang up his claws. In fact, he’s hoping that Wolverine will eventually get a chance to team up with the Avengers. Read his comments after the jump.

Wolverine is at the center of X-Men: Days of Future Past, and we know there will be a third solo Wolverine film. But with Hugh Jackman aging just like everyone else, doing that hardcore Wolverine workout isn’t getting any easier. Getting in shape to play the character is serious work, and isn’t something Jackman can do forever.
So one solution seems obvious, especially if the character will factor in to both X-Men: Apocalypse in 2016, and Wolverine 3 in 2017. Shoot the movies back to back, so Jackman can get in shape once, hold it for the duration of the two films, and then relax a bit.
