Love & Friendship trailer

No one has a better eye for the elaborate rituals and complicated dynamics of privileged society than Whit Stillman — no one, that is, except perhaps Jane AustenLove & Friendship is Stillman’s first time adapting the iconic writer’s work for the big screen, but it’s a combination that feels inevitable in retrospect. And having caught the film at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, I can attest that Stillman’s take on Austen is every bit as sharp and funny as you’d hope.

Kate Beckinsale is in peak form as Lady Susan Vernon, a social-climbing widow whose charm is exceeded only by her ruthlessness. She spends the film plotting to maintain or elevate her status in society, by way of favorable marriage matches for both herself and her naive daughter Frederica (Morfydd Clark). Chloë Sevigny plays Susan’s best friend. Love & Friendship

Jane Austen may have a reputation as a romantic, but I’d argue that her real forte is as a humorist. She’s second to none when it comes to elegantly written, sharply observed comedies about the foibles of England’s upper classes, combining a wry, biting wit with a genuine sense of affection for the characters she’s created.

Naturally, this makes Austen’s work the perfect source of inspiration for Metropolitan and Last Days of Disco director Whit Stillman, who has brought her novella Lady Susan to life in the laugh-out-loud hilarious Love & FriendshipKate Beckinsale plays Lady Susan herself, a cunning widow out to secure her position in society via favorable marriage matches for herself and her daughter.  Read More »

Amazon’s third pilot season is open for business, and you can now watch new shows from directors such as Whit Stillman, David Gordon Green, and Mark Forster. Whit Stillman Pilot

Briefly: Amazon’s next round of pilots includes a show from Whit Stillman (Metropolitan, The Last Days of Disco) and one directed by Marc Forster (World War Z, Quantum of Solace).

Whit Stillman’s show is The Cosmopolitans, which “follows a group of young American expatriates in Paris who are searching for love and friendship in a foreign city.” It stars Adam Brody and Chloe Sevigny , and will shoot in Paris starting this week. Brody previously appeared in Stillman’s most recent film, Damsels in Distress, while Sevigny was in The Last Days of Disco. Dree Hemingway and Shaun Evans also co-star.

Marc Forster isn’t as intimately connected to the drama Hand of God, but will direct the pilot. The show, written by Ben Watkins, stars Ron Perlman as “a hard-living judge who uses visions he believes are sent by God as leads in his vigilante mission to track down the rapist who destroyed his family.” Dana Delany will play Perlaman’s wife, and Garrett Dillahunt plays “a born-again sociopath with violent tendencies.”

Both pilots will appear on Amazon’s streaming service later this year, at which point viewers will be able to vote on the continuation of each story. [EW]

When we first heard about Damsels in Distress, the first film from director Whit Stillman in many years, it was described as a super-low budget indie with no stars. Then, not long ago, Greta Gerwig revealed that she had joined the cast. Not a star, but hardly an unknown. Now Adam Brody has signed on, and we’ve learned the film is backed by Castle Rock. Oh, how things change. Read More »
