One of the last two films Steven Soderbergh plans to shoot before retiring from directing is The Bitter Pill, a thriller scripted by Scott Z. Burns (The Informant!, Contagion) that follows a troubled and highly medicated woman (Rooney Mara) who is dealing with her anxiety pending the release of her husband (Channing Tatum) from prison.
The promising actress Vinessa Shaw (Two Lovers, pictured above, and 3:10 to Yuma) is now set to play the wife of one of Mara’s doctors, who will be portrayed by Jude Law. After The Bitter Pill, Soderbergh will move on to his Liberace biopic for HBO, and then he’s done. (So he says.) [Deadline]
After the break, Ray Liotta lives with chemistry and Stanley Tucci joins two Harry Potter veterans. Read More »

Jena Malone has landed the part of Southern Gothic writer Carson McCullers in Lonely Hunter, a biopic written and directed by Deborah Kampmeier (Hounddog). The film will encompass some 35 years of McCullers’ 50-year life, including her struggles with alcoholism, various illnesses, and a tumultuous marriage. McCullers is probably best known for her debut novel The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, but she also published poems, plays, and short stories throughout her lifetime and was part of the same literary circle as Tennessee Williams and Truman Capote.
Malone appeared in Sucker Punch earlier this year, and will star in next year’s lesbian werewolf romance Jack and Diane. Lonely Hunter is scheduled to begin shooting in spring 2012. [The Hollywood Reporter]
After the jump, World War Z gets a late addition and Vinessa Shaw struggles with the downside of smelling really, really good.

Way back before we knew Chris Evans would become the next Captain America, he took a role in a small indie drama titled Puncture. Directed by Adam and Mark Kassen from a screenplay by Chris Lopta, the film centers around a young, drug-addicted lawyer (Evans) who takes on a case that pits him against a massive healthcare conspiracy. Brett Cullen, Jesse L. Martin, Michael Biehn, Kate Burton, Tess Parker, and Marshall Bell also star, with Vinessa Shaw as Evans’ ER nurse client. Watch the trailer after the jump.

We haven’t had much (if any) coverage of James Mangold’s 3:10 to Yuma remake on /Film based purely on my dislike of movie westerns. But it seems like everywhere I look there is something else about this new flick. Today it’s the movie poster [via
our friends at FirstShowing ComingSoon], which even I must admit, looks very cool.
When a small-time rancher agrees to hold a captured outlaw who’s awaiting a train to go to court in Yuma, a battle of wills ensues as the outlaw tries to psych out the rancher.
The film stars Christian Bale, Russell Crowe, Ben Foster, Peter Fonda and Vinessa Shaw. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl screenwriter Stuart Beattie wrote the script. Someone needs to give the marketing guys over at Lionsgate a raise. This is a first class poster. It might be good enough to help sell a western in a time when westerns are clearly out of style. Check out a larger version of the poster after the jump.
Update: Apparently ComingSoon was the first to post this movie poster.
