The trailers for American Assassin are a tad generic, but the filmmaker behind the thriller doesn’t make generic movies. Michael Cuesta knows how to craft a drama with some real firepower. The director of 12 and Holding and Kill the Messenger has never made a thriller quite like his adaptation of Vince Flynn‘s novel, which stars Dylan O’Brien and Michael Keaton. The trailers paint a movie you’d probably watching during daytime TNT (which I intend as a compliment), but since Cuesta directed the film, I suspect there’s more to American Assassin than the trailers suggest.

American Assassin Trailer

Back in April, the first trailer for American Assassin introduced us to Mitch Rapp, the recurring character from Vince Flynn‘s series of 15 novels following the counterterrorism operative and all the danger and intrigue he’s gets involved with. He’s basically a carbon copy of Jack Ryan, but seemingly a little more deadly, and a new red band trailer shows us just how dangerous he can be.

Michael Keaton Will Train an ‘American Assassin’

Michael Keaton is currently on top of the world. He’s coming off of not one but two Best Picture winners, and could very well find himself in the Oscar race again next winter depending on how things go with The Founder. But that’s not to say he’s limiting himself to prestige dramas. Ed Zwick to Direct ‘American Assassin’

There was a point two years ago when CBS Films put into motion the first adaptation of one of Vince Flynn‘s Mitch Rapp novels. Consent to Kill was going to be the subject of the adaptation, with Antoine Fuqua directing and actors like Matthew Fox, Gerard Butler and Colin Farrell as possible accomplices.

That stalled, and perhaps for the better, as it turns out. Because Vince Flynn last year  published American Assassin, a prequel story that tells of how Mitch Rapp ends up as a CIA terrorist hunter. (Yeah, I know. Just go with it.) Now that book is going to be the first of his from CBS Films, and Ed Zwick has just been set to direct. Read More »
