Tucker & Dale vs. Evil has been making the festival rounds since last January’s Sundance Film Festival, but it wasn’t until last week that the film finally got a rather limited U.S. theatrical release. Starring Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine, Eli Craig‘s comedy turns the hillbilly horror subgenre on its head by telling the story from the rednecks’ perspective. Tucker (Tudyk) and Dale (Labine) are just two well-meaning pals trying to enjoy a quiet fishing weekend in their admittedly run-down cottage. But when a group of obnoxious college kids arrive in their neck of the woods, one deadly misunderstanding leads to another.
It seems like enough gore and (hilarious) tragedy to last poor Tucker and Dale a lifetime, but Craig has other ideas. After the jump, read Craig’s thoughts on a potential sequel for the beleaguered backwoods buddies.

Malin Akerman has signed on to star with Tyler Labine, Lucy Punch, and Daniel Petronijevic in Cottage Country, an dark indie comedy by Canadian director Peter Wellington. Written by Jeremy Boxen (Endgame), the story follows Todd (Labine) as he plans to propose to Cammie (Akerman) at his family cottage. However, Todd’s plans are ruined by the arrival of his slacker brother (Petronijevic) and the brother’s free-spirited girlfriend (Punch).
The film will be Wellington’s first feature since 2003′s Luck. Wellington has been working primarily in television over the last several years, on shows including Rookie Blue and Slings and Arrows. The film is currently shooting in Ontario through late October for a 2012 release. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Battlestar Galactica star Tricia Helfer has signed up for NBC’s The Firm, based on the bestselling John Grisham novel of the same title. (The book was also turned into a 1993 film starring Tom Cruise.) Helfer will be playing Alex Clark, a senior partner at the central law firm of Kinross & Clark. The project reuintes her with fellow Cylon Callum Keith Rennie.
The story revolves around an attorney named Mitch McDeere (Josh Lucas) and his wife Abby (Molly Parker), who are trying to make a new life for themselves in D.C. When Mitch gets brought in as a partner at Kinross & Clark, he slowly comes to realize that the firm isn’t exactly what it seems. Juliette Lewis co-stars as Mitch’s receptionist, and Rennie as Mitch’s older brother.
Helfer’s demonstrated some impressive acting chops during her time at BSG, and the role of a tough, morally iffy lawyer seems like a perfect fit for a woman made famous by her role as a tough, morally iffy Cylon. I look forward to many shots of Lucas looking simultaneously entranced and terrified. [TV Line]

I’m not sure who decreed that 2011 be the year of the R-rated-comedy-starring-Jason-Sudeikis, but here we are with a trailer for the third such project this year. A Good Old-Fashioned Orgy stars the SNL vet as Eric, a frat boy-ish 30something who lives to throw over-the-top parties at his dad’s Hamptons home. When Eric’s dad decides to sell the house, Eric decides he has to do something truly special for his last big blowout. (You can probably guess from the title what theme he eventually settles on.)

Tucker & Dale Vs Evil premiered at Sundance 2010, and despite earning a lot of fans with the performances of Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine and the comedy and horror mix that writer/director Eli Craig offered up, the film has been in distribution limbo ever since.
That changes now, as Magnet has announced that it will distribute the film at the end of this summer, with an August 26 VOD bow and a September 30 theatrical opening. Rosanna Arquette is about to make her first dramatic feature, Hemlock Drive, after making a couple of documentaries. The film is “about an eccentric mother in Connecticut who learns she is dying and brings her three adult children back home for a weekend.” Part of the plot involves the matriarch getting her kids to throw a living funeral, Get Low style, although it sounds like this is meant to be a bit more funny than the climactic scene in that movie.
Now Susan Sarandon is in talks to play the main character, with Adam Brody in talks for one of her kids, and David Arquette negotiating a role as a nearby bar owner. The film, written by Jennifer Carta and Mandy Steckelberg, will shoot in Louisiana in September. [The Wrap]

The European Film Market is getting underway tomorrow in Berlin, and a big pre-emptive buy has been made by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, which partnered with Samuel Goldwyn Films to grab US rights for a Jason Sudeikis comedy called A Good Old Fashioned Orgy. Read More »
Eli Craig, director of the acclaimed short film The Tao of Pong, makes his feature directorial debut with the Canadian horror comedy Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, one of the films selected for the Park City at Midnight category of the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. Co-written by Morgan Jurgenson, the story follows two West Virginian hillbillies who go on vacation to their dilapidated mountain cabin, but their peaceful trip goes horribly awry when a bunch of college kids show up.
Basically, it’s the story of the typical hillbilly horror film told from the other side. And as it turns out, the hillbillys aren’t evil, and are only mistaken as psycho killers through a series of misconstrued circumstances. The film stars Tyler Labine, who most people will recognize from the television series Reaper, alongside Alan Tudyk, who most people will recognize from the television series Firefly. The film co-stars Katrina Bowden, Jesse Moss, Brandon Jay McLaren, Christie Laing and Chelan Simmons.
