While Sundance is best known for movies that sell for millions and stir up controversial topics, most of the movies are simple, well-written, well-acted films that are solid, but often get lost in the mix. Lynn Shelton‘s follow-up to Humpday, called Your Sister’s Sister, is one of those movies. Another is GOATS, the debut feature of Christopher Neil.
Your Sister’s Sister features Emily Blunt and Rosemarie DeWitt as estranged sisters Iris and Hannah who end up at their family’s old cabin when Iris’ best friend Jack (Mark Duplass) heads there to get over the one-year anniversary of the death of his brother. The three characters then develop what I’d like to call a “love triangle” but is more like a “love right angle” that flirts on and off with adding that third line.
GOATS stars David Duchovny, Vera Farmiga and Ty Burrell as the parental figures of a young teenager named Eliis, played by Graham Phillips. Ellis lives a care-free, hippie lifestyle in Arizona with his mom (Farmiga) and her groundskeeper named Goat Man (Duchovny) but when he decides to go back east to the prep school run by his estranged father (Burrell), he finds himself torn between two very different set of parental ideals.

On day two of the 38th annual Telluride Film Festival and I caught the amazing new Pixar film LA Luna, Wim Wenders 3D documentary Pina about the famous modern dance choreographer, and the first surprise premiere screening of the festival, Jim Field Smith‘s dark dramedy Butter, a top Black List screenplay about a midwest butter carving championship which stars Jennifer Garner, Ty Burrell, Olivia Wilde, Ashley Greene, Alicia Silverstone, Rob Corddry and Hugh Jackman.

Last year, we brought you a small casting report on an indie called Goats, when Ty Burrell joined the cast. Because I know that casting news on the delayed remake of Footloose is what you’re all more hungry for than anything else, here’s the only casting note that matters this week: Thomas Dekker (Heroes, Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles, Kaboom, A Nightmare on Elm Street) is apparently the latest top candidate to play ‘Two Degrees of Kevin Bacon,’ as, if cast, he’d step into the shoes of Bacon’s classic character from the original film.
Zac Efron and Chace Crawford have both been linked to the film, but in the last few months they’ve passed, and the directorial baton has been handed from Kenny Ortega to Craig Brewer. This isn’t hard and fast casting, though, so there’s still a chance (There’s also an open casting call for guys 18 and up to play high schoolers.) [LAT]

The casting info continues to pour in for Jim Field Smith‘s political satire called Butter. There’s already quite a lineup: Jennifer Garner, Rob Corddry, Ty Burrell, Ashley Greene and more. Now Olivia Wilde (Tron Legacy) has been added, as has Alicia Silverstone.
But there’s some confusion. Movieline reports that Wilde is cast as a tattooed stripper (with Betty Page bangs, no less) who is mistress to a butter-carving champion played by Ty Burrell. But previously we’d heard that Rob Corddry was playing that role. Figuring that one out. Meanwhile, the wife of said champion, played by Jennifer Garner, decides to take the crown for herself, and must best a young girl played by Yara Shahidi. Silverstone will be the adoptive mother of the girl. As mentioned before this is a satirical analog for the 2008 Democratic Iowa caucus. But am I the only one reminded of Diablo Cody based on the description of the stripper character ?
