When the Academy Award nominations were announced earlier this week, Toy Story 3 got nods for best picture, adapted screenplay, animated feature film, original song, and sound editing. Some of the /Film readers have been wondering — why was Toy Story 3 nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and not Best Original Screenplay. 83rd Annual Academy Award Nominations Announced

The nominees for the 83rd Annual Academy Awards have been announced. As expected, big players include The Social Network and The King’s Speech, but there are very strong showings for The Kids Are All Right, The Fighter and True Grit. The Best Picture nominees are: Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, The King’s Speech, 127 Hours, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, True Grit, and Winter’s Bone. If you’re going by the numbers, The King’s Speech is strong with 12, followed by a wonderful 10 for True Grit and then 8 for both The Social Network and Inception, with the latter scoring on technical nominations.

Jonathan Levine, the director of The Wackness, All The Boys Love Mandy Lane and the upcoming dramedy Live With It, has submitted his list of the top 10 movies of 2010. Looking back, 2010 is not going to be remembered as a particularly good year for movies. In my mind, most of the 150 or so new films I saw from January to December are all muddled together in a big pile of mediocrity. When that happens though, it’s so much easier to pick out the truly great ones. To that end, picking my favorite movies of 2010 was easier than previous years. What was harder, though, was weeding through an insane amount of movies that didn’t end up getting released during 2010. Why recommend them if you can’t see them?
