Wonderful Christmastime A Cappella

Sing is the latest animated comedy from Illumination Entertainment, and it’s in theaters now. If somehow after the onslaught of musically charged TV spots that have been all over the place this holiday season you weren’t aware of that, here’s another reminder.

The voice cast of Sing (including Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Seth MacFarlane and Tori Kelly) appeared on The Tonight Show to perform an a cappella version of Paul McCartney‘s signature holiday tune “Wonderful Christmastime” with the help of Jimmy Fallon and The Roots. Oh, and the former member of The Beatles popped up to help out too.

Sing Review

Note: With Sing out this weekend, we’re re-running our review from the TIFF.

Since Despicable Me, Illumination Entertainment has established itself as a go-to source for sturdy family entertainment. Their films may not reach the artistic heights of Pixar or Disney, but you can generally count on them to be perfectly pleasant and inoffensive, able to entertain the kids without annoying the parents.

Sing is Illumination’s first musical, but otherwise it’s cut from the same cloth as the company’s other films. While not especially deep, the combination of a star-studded cast and an equally star-studded music catalogue make for a fun time. It’s light and sweet and pretty as cotton candy, and it dissolves from memory just as quickly.  Read More »

‘Sing’ Trailer: Any Animal Can Be a Rock Star

Sing Trailer

This weekend brings the animated musical Trolls to theaters, which means there’s no better time for Universal and Illumination Entertainment to push their own music-infused animated comedy, Sing.

An all-new Sing trailer has arrived, and as someone who has been skeptical about how this movie would turn out, I have to say that this most recent tease of the movie actually shows off some more enticing character and story details, showing that this is much more than a showcase of some famous pop tunes. It’s a little weird that Eminem’s “Sing for the Moment,” which samples Aerosmith’s “Dream On,” is used to market a kids movies, but whatever works, I guess.

Sing Trailer

Illumination Entertainment has a couple of new animated movies hitting theaters this year. The first is the animal adventure The Secret Life of Pets, arriving this summer. But just before Christmas, Illumination will get musical with Sing. In what is basically Zootopia meets American Idol, one koala (Matthew McConaughey) decides to put on a huge singing competition to save his theater, and some average animals with incredible pipes look at it as their opportunity for a better life. Of course, it’s all fueled by an endless array of popular songs from yesterday and today.

Sing Audition Clips

If the Minions aren’t your cup of tea, then maybe you’ll be more interested in one of Illumination Entertainment’s other projects coming this year. The Secret Life of Pets is the next one from the animation studio arriving this summer, but just before Christmas this year, they also have the musically charged Sing.

Like many animated movies, this one takes place in a world where animals live like humans, and one koala has fallen on hard times, unable to keep his theaters up and running. So in a last ditch effort to keep the place alive, he decides to throw an epic singing competition, and some clips of the animals auditioning for the show have just debuted before the official teaser trailer arrives next week.
