We’ve been very excited to see Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, the new film from Let the Right One In director Tomas Alfredson that stars Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ciaran Hinds, Mark Strong, Svetlana Khodchenko, Toby Jones, John Hurt, Stephen Graham and Kathy Burke.. The film is essentially both a remake of a BBC mini-series that starred Alec Guinness and an adaptation of the novel of the same name by John Le Carré.
The author wrote two more books that round out what is called ‘the Karla Trilogy:’ The Honourable Schoolboy and Smiley’s People. The George Smiley character, played in this version by Gary Oldman, also shows up in other Le Carré novels. And now there is the intimation that the positive response to Tinker could lead to at least one more film adapting the follow-up novels. Read More »

We’ve seen a couple international trailers for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, as the film opens this week in the UK. It won’t hit the US until December 9, and so we’ve only just been given a US trailer. But the upshot of waiting is that this trailer features some footage you might not yet have seen, much of which focuses on Tom Hardy‘s character. Looks like Universal is responding to increasing interest in the actor, based in part upon the fact that he’s playing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises.
Regardless, Tomas Alfredson‘s follow-up to Let the Right One In still looks as good as some of the early reviews suggest it will be. One of the most anticipated films of the Venice Film Festival was Tomas Alfredson‘s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, which is a new take on John le Carré‘s 1974 cold-war thriller novel. The film remakes the well-loved 1979 BBC version starring Alec Guinness as retired MI6 agent George Smiley, called back to action to uncover a mole infesting the agency, aka ‘the Circus.’ This version features Gary Oldman as Smiley, with supporting players Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ciaran Hinds, Mark Strong, Svetlana Khodchenko, Toby Jones, John Hurt, Stephen Graham and Kathy Burke.

At this point I can’t imagine that I have to reiterate the basic facts that have many of us anticipating Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy like crazy. There’s the source material: John le Carré‘s jargon-laced cold war novel, which has already led to a great 1979 BBC version starring Alec Guinness. There’s the director: Tomas Alfredson, whose last film was Let the Right One In. And there’s the cast, which speaks for itself: Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ciaran Hinds, Mark Strong, Svetlana Khodchenko, Toby Jones, John Hurt, Stephen Graham and Kathy Burke.

Hot on the heels of the release of a massive batch of films that will appear in the Toronto Film Festival, we’ve got the main lineup for the 68th Venice Film Festival, which runs from August 31 to September 10.
We knew that George Clooney‘s The Ides of March would open the fest (the trailer premiered last night and you can see it here) and this list confirms quite a few films that we imagined would be playing Venice. Our very much anticipated spy thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy from Let the Right One In director Tomas Alfredson is on the list, as is Roman Polanski‘s tense closed-room drama Carnage, starring Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly and Christoph Waltz. And there is Alps, the second film from polarizing Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, whose film Dogtooth shocked, entertained and angered festival audiences in 2009.

I’ve been looking forward to Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy since I first heard that Let the Right One In director Tomas Alfredson had been tapped to direct from Peter Morgan‘s (The Queen, Frost/Nixon) script. My excitement has only increased with each new casting announcement — Gary Oldman! Colin Firth! Tom Hardy! Mark Strong! Now a first teaser has dropped for the film, and though we don’t get to see a whole lot, what we do see looks frankly fantastic. See if you agree with me after the jump.

One of my most anticipated films of the year is Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. That’s in part because it is the new film, at last, from Let the Right One In director Tomas Alfredson. And in part because the cast is about as good as they come (if quite skewed towards the male): Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ciaran Hinds, Mark Strong, Svetlana Khodchenko, Toby Jones, John Hurt, Stephen Graham and Kathy Burke. Whew. That is a mad bastard of a cast list.

One of the year’s more promising films is Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. The cold war-era tale stars Gary Oldman as a former MI:6 operative who comes out of retirement to ferret out a mole in the intelligence organization. Benedict Cumberbatch, Ciaran Hinds, Mark Strong, Svetlana Khodchenko, Toby Jones, John Hurt, Stephen Graham and Kathy Burke all appear in the film, footage of which premiered to great reception at the recent European Film Market in Berlin.
