The phrase “Oscar contender” has been thrown around a lot over the past week or so, mostly thanks to festivals in Telluride, Venice, and Toronto. Films like Argo, The Master, Cloud Atlas, The Place Beyond the Pines and The Silver Linings Playbook have all been deemed likely instant “Oscar contenders.” And that may be the case, but Hollywood likely has a big budget trick or two up their sleeves. Several major studio releases that are likely “Oscar contenders” still remain a mystery, such as Lincoln, Flight, Life of Pi, Zero Dark Thirty, and Les Miserables.
Tom Hooper‘s follow up to his last Oscar-winning film opens December 14 featuring Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe and Eddie Redmayne in the musical adaptation of Victor Hugo‘s novel. The first trailer left goosebumps and now there’s a video of Redmayne, who plays Marius, discussing the final day of filming on a massive, practical set. Check it out below. Read More »

Just yesterday, we got a big batch of promising photos from the set of Tom Hooper‘s Les Misérables, and today we have something even better: the first teaser. While we’ve seen video of the cast on set before, this is our first time seeing actual footage from the movie. Expectations for this project have been sky-high ever since it was first announced, thanks to its beloved source material and A-list talents. This first video, at least, has no trouble living up to them.
Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe lead the cast as Jean Valjean and Inspector Javert in Hooper’s adaptation of the classic Victor Hugo novel and smash Broadway musical. Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Samantha Barks, Eddie Redmayne, Helena Bonham Carter, and Sacha Baron Cohen also star. Watch the video after the jump.

The release date for Tom Hooper‘s Les Misérables is still seven months out, but Oscar buzz has been surrounding this project from the get-go. No surprise there — it is, after all, a splashy cinematic adaptation of a beloved Broadway musical and classic Victor Hugo novel, with the Oscar-winning director of The King’s Speech at the helm and A-listers like Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, and Anne Hathaway among its stars. Regardless of how the finished product turns out, any film with that kind of pedigree is bound to attract a fair amount of attention.
Fortunately, what we’ve seen of it so far suggests that Les Misérables actually stands a chance of living up to all that hype. The first set photos of Jackman and Crowe (as leads Jean Valjean and Inspector Javert, respectively) hit earlier this spring, and today we’ve got a fresh batch of official stills that show, in addition to Jackman, Crowe, and Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried as Cosette, Eddie Redmayne as Marius, and stage vet Samantha Barks as Éponine. Check out the new images after the jump.

Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper‘s big budget, musical adaptation of Les Miserables made my top ten anticipated films of 2012 because behind all the geek stereotypes, a good musical really gets to me and Les Miserables is one of my favorites. So when I say these newly leaked set videos featuring stars Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway singing are among some of the best I’ve ever seen, it comes from a place of passion.
One of the videos looks to be the grand finale of the story, the reprise of “Do You Hear The People Sing?” performed the entire company. Another is of Jackman’s character, Jean Valjean, storming out of a church singing and a third is of Russell Crowe‘s character Javier, who is hunting Valjean, riding to set on a horse.
Okay, so the videos get less exciting as they go along but they do provide a unique glimpse at the filming of such a massive musical. Check them out after the jump. Read More »

After picking up Best Director and Best Picture at the 2010 Oscars, The King’s Speech helmer Tom Hooper mostly sat out this past awards season. But the way things are shaping up for his next film, Les Misérables, it’s more than likely he’ll be back in the spotlight again next year.

After months of speculation, rumors, and reports, Tom Hooper‘s Les Misérables has finally found its Éponine. Producer Cameron Mackintosh has just announced that 21-year-old stage vet Samantha Barks has landed the role. Barks is a newcomer when it comes to film and television, but has racked up plenty of experience in the theater — including a stint playing Éponine in a London production of Les Misérables.
Meanwhile, another fresh face, George Blagden, has also boarded the project, in the part of cynical young revolutionary Grantaire. Blagden and Barks join a high-profile cast that includes Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried, Sacha Baron Cohen, Helena Bonham Carter, and Aaron Tveit.
