tickled

David D’Amato, the central “villain” of the popular 2016 documentary film Tickled, has passed away at age 55. The movie was one of David Chen’s best films of 2016 and I recently caught up with it when it hit HBO. I’m not sure Tickled is a great film, but it’s certainly compelling, weird, and a must-watch. HBO users can now watch it alongside a short film titled The Tickle King, which serves as a quasi-sequel and updates you on everything that has happened since the film originally screened.

As Tickled is structured as a mystery, complete with some strange twists, I would warn you against reading anything about the film, watching a trailer, or even delving further in this post if you have yet to see the movie.

David Chen’s Top 10 Films of 2016

screen-shot-2016-12-23-at-8-39-29-am

This is a year where you had to work to see great films. Unlike last year, the vast majority of my favorite movies of 2016 weren’t movies that received wide releases, nor were they films that earned over $50 million at the box office. Instead, they were often quieter releases that I had to read up on in order to make sure I caught them during the 1-2 weeks they were playing in my city.

The good news is, if you did the work, you were richly rewarded. While the movie industry as a whole is not doing so hot, movies as a form of storytelling still feel as vital as ever. What follows are my top 10 movies of 2016.  Read More »

Tickled is one of the most bizarre and riveting documentaries of the year, but the real-life story unfolding around the film is also getting stranger by the day.

Last night at a Tickled Q&A in Los Angeles, the film’s co-director Dylan Reeve encountered a surprise: several people featured in the documentary showed up for the screening. Hit the jump for the cringe-worthy video that resulted, and some thoughts from co-director David Farrier on how he feels about proceeding with the film’s release. Massive SPOILERS for the Tickled documentary follow (If it’s playing in a theater near you, you should see it. It’s great).

siff2016

This year will be my fourth attending the Seattle International Film Festival, and it remains an intense and overwhelming experience. Spanning 25 days, this year’s festival will include over 420 films representing 85 countries, making it the largest film festival in the United States. Here at /Film and on the /Filmcast, I’ll do my best to keep up with some of the highlights of the fest, and let you know what films might be worth checking out when they hit wide release.

After the jump, you can read a few of my mini-reviews of WeinerThe Last King, and Tickled. If you see me at the festival, feel free to say hi, and leave comments below if you think there are any films on SIFF’s full calendar that one should not miss this year.

‘Tickled’ Trailer: Who Is the Tickle King?

tickled

Have you ever heard of competitive endurance tickling? Today’s the first I’ve heard of it, thanks to the trailer for the upcoming documentary, Tickled. The doc follows a journalist named David Farrier, as he investigates the dark underbelly of the world of endurance tickling. While that synopsis sounds like a joke, it’s not.

Watch the Tickled trailer below.
