Last year The Final Girls came and went from theaters and VOD rather quickly, not giving it much time to find an audience. However, in the short time since its release, the film has started to become a cult favorite with midnight screenings popping up in various cities, some accompanied by drag shows, and others featuring director Todd Strauss-Schulson and some of the cast in attendance. Now fans in San Diego during Comic-Con will get a chance to partake in one of those events themselves.
The Final Girls will have a “secret” midnight screening on Saturday, July 23 at 11:59pm as well as a panel earlier in the day just a couple blocks from the convention center where all the action is happening. So if you’re a horror fan who isn’t pleased with the offerings inside the convention center itself, this is where you’ll want to be on Saturday. Cersei’s wild gambit may be getting all the attention this morning, but last night also marked the season finale of HBO’s other great saga about power and manipulation, Silicon Valley. The good news is that the season ended on a high note — season three has been its best to date and the finale was every bit as hilarious and tragic as the episodes that have come before it. The bad news is that this means we’ve got many months to wait until we can check back in with Richard, Jared, and the rest of the Pied Piper gang.
Until then, though, we’ll have other opportunities to enjoy that cast. Silicon Valley lead Thomas Middleditch, for example, stars in Joshy, as a bereaved man who tries to enjoy what would have been his bachelor party. Jeff Baena‘s Sundance dramedy is lousy with comedic talents including Adam Pally, Nick Kroll, Brett Gelman, Alex Ross Perry, Jenny Slate, and Aubrey Plaza. Watch the first Joshy trailer below. It’s been nearly three years since Scot Armstrong started shooting Search Party, an R-rated comedy starring Happy Endings alum Adam Pally and Silicon Valley stars T.J. Miller and Thomas Middleditch. Originally, the plan was for Universal to open Search Party in fall 2014 — but fall 2014 came and went without a release, and it’s only now, as we creep into summer 2016, that it’s finally getting ready to hit theaters.
Search Party has strong shades of The Hangover, which seems appropriate enough considering Armstrong wrote The Hangover Part II. Miller and Pally play Jason and Evan, friends of groom-to-be Nardo (Middleditch). Convinced Nardo is making a huge mistake, Jason bursts into the wedding and ruins it. A devastated Nardo heads to Mexico to try and win back his bride, only to wind up naked and stranded and alone with no one to call for help but Jason and Evan. If you’ve been reading /Film awhile, you know that character actor Stephen Tobolowsky holds a special place in our heart thanks to David Chen’s outstanding podcast The Tobolowsky Files, as well as his documentary, The Primary Instinct. And now the star of movies like Groundhog Day and shows such as Californication is heading to one of the best comedies on television.
The first trailer for the third season of HBO’s series Silicon Valley has just arrived, and it shows that the future of Pied Piper is a bit uncertain as the company is getting a new CEO following the events of last season that saw Laurie Bream (Suzanne Cryer) and Raviga Capital removing Richard Hendricks (Thomas Middleditch) as the CEO of his own company. And guess who the new CEO turns out to be?

Season two of Silicon Valley did not disappoint. The episode where Pied Piper (minor spoiler alert) live-streamed somebody trapped at the bottom of a ravine? Wonderful. The season two finale ended things on a high note with a surprisingly suspenseful final episode. What’s changed for Pied Piper since season two? Based on the Silicon Valley season three teaser, not much.

Around the time that The Final Girls hit limited theaters and VOD, we showed off some pages from the production diary that helped director Todd Strauss-Schulson plan his stunning, meta horror comedy. And now that the film is hitting Blu-ray and DVD today, we have another cool behind the scenes feature to show you.
In The Final Girls, there’s a key sequence that was pulled off in a single impressive shot. (If you’ve seen it, it’s the part when the camp counselors and kids trapped in Camp Bloodbath try to trap the killer.) I was sure that visual effects were used to combine several different shots into one, but now we can show you on-set footage of The Final Girls single shot being completed by a programmed camera rig that made it possible. And if you haven’t seen the movie, don’t worry, because we have the finished clip from the movie too. Watch! Read More »
In a little over a month, the publicity machine is going to be in full swing as we lead up to the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. You can bet that the entire cast and director J.J. Abrams will be making the rounds to morning news programs, late night talk shows, and pretty much everywhere else to help promote the movie that simply doesn’t need anymore promotion. But in the meantime, Abrams has gotten a round of questions from some movers and shakers in all sorts of entertainment, and they want answers.
Cloverfield star T.J. Miller, Girls creator Lena Dunham, Suicide Squad star Jared Leto, Netflix’s content acquisitions chief Ted Sarandos, even George Lucas himself and many more have tons of burning questions about The Force Awakens, Lost and just life in general. Abrams gives some pretty great answers for your entertainment. Read More »
Last week we brought you an exclusive batch of posters from The Final Girls, the absolutely fantastic horror comedy with a whole lot of heart from director Todd Strauss-Schulson. If you haven’t seen it yet, I can’t overstate how much you need to stop what you’re doing and go see this movie on VOD right now.
Otherwise, for anyone out there who has seen the movie and/or may be an aspiring filmmaker, the director sent over to us what is basically his making of The Final Girls — but from before the film was even shot. It’s a handwritten guide to shooting the movie, full of notes and quickly drawn shot diagrams that plan the entire film. It just goes to show you how carefully planned every single element of the movie is before cameras roll. See the making of The Final Girls after the jump. Read More »
Cool Posts From Around the Web:
This weekend brings a wonderful meshing of horror and comedy with some real heart in the form of The Final Girls. The meta flick takes Taissa Farmiga and throws her into the world of the horror movie that her mother (Malin Akerman) made famous, making for a reunion that is simultaneously thrilling, touching and hilarious. It’s like Last Action Hero, but way better.
And to help get the word out about this seriously incredible movie that will be in limited theaters and available on VOD starting Friday, October 9th, we’ve got an exclusive batch of character posters designed by Alex Pardee, the brilliant artist who has delivered awesome work for The World’s End and Attack the Block previously.
Plus, if you need anymore convincing (other than the awesome trailer), director Todd Strauss-Schulson checked in with us to make sure you know that this movie is all about. And if that’s not enough, we had a great interview with him back in August that you should definitely take the time to read. Otherwise, check out The Final Girls posters below! Read More »
I went into The Final Girls at SXSW this year having no idea what to expect from the horror/comedy Todd Strauss-Schulson. What I saw was a very funny comedy that has a good take on the tropes of slasher films, but also a movie that has a really effective core about dealing with difficult family trauma. The cast is led by Taissa Farmiga, Malin Akerman, and Nina Dobrev, with Alexander Ludwig, Alia Shawkat, Thomas Middleditch, and Adam Devine in major roles. Check out The Final Girls trailer here.
