2017 Emmys Opening - Stephen Colbert

The 69th Primetime Emmy Awards were broadcast on CBS last night, handing out awards to HBO’s Big Little Lies and Veep, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, Netflix’s Black Mirror, NBC’s This Is Us, FX’s Atlanta, and many more (get the full list of winners right here). But if you weren’t able to watch, we have the best moments from the show for your viewing pleasure.

The Late Show host Stephen Colbert served as master of ceremonies, opening the show with a musical number and an extensive monologue that featured one surprising guest that not only shocked people, but also made them feel a little uncomfortable. 69th Emmy Awards - 2017 Emmy Winners

The 69th Primetime Emmy Awards aired on CBS Sunday night with The Late Show host Stephen Colbert serving as master of ceremonies for the prestigious night out with some of television’s finest talents.

This morning brought the cavalcade of nominations for the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards, which will be handed out in September. Westworld was out in front with a whopping 22 nominations for its freshman season while other debut shows like This Is Us, as well as continuing shows like Veep and Saturday Night Live, also landed a surprising number of nods. But there are only so many slots for nominees and plenty of shows were snubbed by the Television Academy. Thankfully, it wasn’t all bad news though as there were some pleasant (sometimes goofy) surprises as well.

2016 Emmy Nominations

Today brought the nominations for the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards, and Westworld came out on top on the drama side of things with a total of 22 nominations across the board. On the comedy side, Veep was the leader with a total of 17 nominations. The miniseries Feud: Bette and Joan also fared well with 18 nominations.

Outside of the leaders of the pack, shows like Stranger Things, This Is Us, Big Little Lies, The Night Of and The Handmaid’s Tale made a big splash. Plus, Saturday Night Live had a big presence this year as well, tying Westworld with 22 nominations as well.

This Is Us season two

Before season one of This Is Us ends this March, NBC has already ordered two more seasons of the hit drama, which will soon feature Katie Couric and Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) as guest stars. After receiving great reviews and being greeted by a passionate audience, season one was extended to 18 episodes. Season two and three are 18 episodes a piece as well.

I hadn’t initially planned on seeing This Is Us, Dan Fogelman’s new NBC drama. The billboards and advertising plastered around Los Angeles made it look uninteresting. I’m not against television dramas, I loved Parenthood and Friday Night Lights (although the advertising for those shows didn’t interest me either, it was the buzz from friends that brought me to them). And then the This Is Us reviews came out just before its premiere teasing a big unexpected twist at the end of the pilot episode. Okay, you got me. So I watched it and I have a few thoughts on the matter.
