Meryl Streep prevented the cast and crew of The Artist from a total sweep of the major categories at this year’s British Academy Film Awards, presented by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and commonly called the BAFTAs. Streep won Best Actress for playing former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, and The Artist took Best Film, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Original Music and Best Costume Design.

Year-end top 10 lists can get pretty mind-numbing, as you see the same titles crop up again and again and again… and again, but filmmaker John Waters has set himself apart by both by posting his a bit early and by, oh yeah, being John Waters. You wouldn’t seriously expect the man who gave us Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble, and Hairspray to just name War Horse and The Artist like everrrrrrryone else, would you?
No, Waters’ tastes tend toward more unconventional choices, like Kaboom, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never (seriously), with Pedro Almodovar‘s The Skin I Live In topping the list. Read the top 10 after the jump.

Every year during awards season, The Hollywood Reporter somehow organizes the schedules of basically every single actor, actress, writer and director of the year’s best films to sit down and discuss them. This, in itself, is pretty spectacular. What’s even better is they release the videos of the full conversations so we can watch. Another Fantastic Fest is in the books and the festival once again lived up to its name. Reviews out of Cannes might have been mixed at best, but the images and footage we’ve seen so far from The Skin I Live In, aka the reunion of Pedro Almodovar and Antonio Banderas, are just too weird to allow me to write the film off completely. The film is about experimentation, control, and sex, and at the very least it looks as visually lush as you’d hope to see from a deliberately genre-informed outing from Almodovar.
We saw an international teaser for the movie not long ago that made it appear to have an unusually sexy/creepy/cool vibe. And now the US trailer has made its way online. It comes complete with the same strange/sexy tone, thanks in part to an infectious and bouncy music track. But then Antonio Banderas turns a hose on some poor guy and you have to wonder what’s really happening. Check it out below. Read More »

If you’re more interested in the typical fall slate of festival entrees than summer’s glut of tentpole action fare, this is a great week. The Toronto International Film Festival announced the first wave of films that will play the fest in September. This is a batch of about 50 titles, which makes up only a small chunk of the programming. Usually TIFF features between two and three hundred films. But these are some of the highest-profile entries.

We’ve got a handful of release dates to share, with the biggest possibly being Guillermo del Toro‘s upcoming Pacific Rim, which, if things go well, will begin shooting late this summer or in early fall. Warner Bros. will distribute the Legendary Pictures production, and has just set July 12, 2013 as the release date. Pacific Rim is scripted by Travis Beacham and already boasts Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba and Charlie Day in the cast. The story is “set in a future where giant malevolent creatures threaten to destroy the earth, and the planet must band together and use advanced weapons technology to eradicate the growing threat.” [THR]

Reviews at Cannes painted Pedro Almodovar‘s new film, The Skin I Live In, as a muddled but sometimes effective thriller. A new international teaser for the movie has landed, and it certainly hypes up the ‘effective’ part, even while suggesting the same all over the map tone of which some complained at Cannes.
I got a kick out of this teaser because it makes the film look like it has the camp playfulness and style of Mario Bava’s wild comic book classic Danger: Diabolik, only filtered through the more intensely psycho-sexual and self-aware viewpoint of Peddro Almodovar. If I saw this without knowing anything else of the film I’d walk away pretty keen to see the film. See what you think, after the break. Read More »
Another of our most-anticipated Cannes premieres was shown to press early today, Cannes time, and reviews are hitting the web. Pedro Almodovar‘s The Skin I Live In represents his first collaboration with actor Antonio Banderas in twenty years, and also marks a break in subject matter for the director.
Based on Thierry Jonquet‘s novel Tarantula (aka Mygale), the story follows an ambitious plastic surgeon (Banderas) whose wife was burned in an accident, leading him to attempt to synthesize a new, superior form of human skin. The picture seems like a weird medical horror/thriller story, and indeed, at the film’s press conference, the director said, “It’s a thriller indeed because it fits in with my life at present. Throughout my career as a director, I’ve worked in different genres—comedy, drama and now I’m in a thriller period. Through thrillers, you can touch on other types of genre. I don’t think it’s completely necessary to stick to the rules of a type of genre like people naively did in the ‘50s.”
Reviews so far praise elements (Banderas’ performance) while clucking a bit over the fact that the film isn’t supremely focused. That seems to be par for the course at Cannes this year, where there has been little overwhelming critical consensus about any film other than Lynne Ramsay’s widely-praised We Need to Talk About Kevin.
