Ever since Jon Bernthal made his debut as the Punisher in Daredevil season two, fans have been eager to find out when we’ll see him next. We know for sure he’s getting his own The Punisher solo series, but not when it’ll debut. And then there’s the question of whether he might resurface before then. Is it possible he’ll pop up in one of the other Netflix-Marvel shows, like Iron Fist or The Defenders?

The villains have often been the highlight of Marvel’s Netflix series, with Vincent D’Onofrio’s Walter Fisk emerging as the standout character of Daredevil and David Tennant leaving quite an impression as the psychic sociopath Kilgrave on Jessica Jones. Luke Cage looks to be following suit with a baddie played by House of Cards star, Mahershala Ali. So when an antagonist is cast in a new Marvel/Netflix series, you stand up and pay attention.
And that brings us to today’s news: Ben Barnes has been reportedly cast as a villain in the upcoming The Punisher, which will give Jon Bernthal’s vengeful vigilante his own series after stealing so many scenes in Daredevil season 2.

Netflix’s little corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to expand in a big way, with Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders all coming in the next year or so. But today, we have some updates on what we won’t be seeing from them in the near future. The company has revealed that they’re holding off on Jessica Jones season 2, Daredevil season 3, and Punisher until after The Defenders, which means we likely won’t see them until 2018 or so. Even before the Punisher made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in the second season of Daredevil, rumors abounded about the possibility of a Punisher spinoff. He’s a popular character to begin with, after all, and Jon Bernthal couldn’t be a better choice to play him. Then the character actually appeared on the show, and proved to be everything fans had hoped for. The calls for a Punisher spinoff only got louder. And now, Marvel is finally ready to make its move.
A Punisher spinoff has reportedly been ordered by Marvel, with Bernthal set to return as the vigilante character. Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner. Read More »
