Derek Cianfrance and Ryan Gosling followed up their 2010 film Blue Valentine by shooting The Place Beyond the Pines, a film in which Gosling plays a motorcycle stunt rider and criminal (a familiar role for him) who tangles with a cop (Bradley Cooper) in the beginning of a conflict that involves their sons, as well. The movie also features Eva Mendes, Rose Byrne, Ben Mendelsohn, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, and Ray Liotta, and is said to be inspired by Jack London.

But the sonic palette of the film might be slightly more modern, as the score is being written by Mike Patton, best known for his work with Faith No More, Mr. Bungle and Fantomas. That’s not a choice I ever would have expected, but it might be pretty awesome. Read More »

Soon after making his dark relationship indie Blue Valentine, Derek Cianfrance co-wrote a movie called The Place Beyond the Pines, which he says was inspired by Jack London and features two generations of conflicting fathers and sons, as well as motorcycles and guns.

His Blue Valentine star Ryan Gosling signed on to be a motorcycle rider who turns to crime — yeah, shades of Drive there — and is pursued by a rookie cop (Bradley Cooper). Eva Mendes, Rose Byrne, Ben Mendelsohn, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, and Ray Liotta also joined the cast. After the break are the first full-size official stills of Gosling and Cooper as they appear in the movie. Read More »

Blue Valentine director and star Derek Cianfrance and Ryan Gosling are back together for the multi-generational crime/grudge saga The Place Beyond the Pines. The film follows Gosling as a stunt cyclist who robs banks in order to provide for his son, and ands up entangled with cop-turned-politician Bradley Cooper. Their antagonism spills down the family tree, eventually involving their sons.

The large cast was said to include Greta Gerwig, but now we’ve learned that she had never fully signed on, and won’t be able to take part in the film due to other obligations. Stepping into the role earmarked for her will be Rose Byrne, of Damages and Bridesmaids. Read More »

Derek Cianfrance‘s been collecting quite a solid cast for his next project, the “Deer Hunter meets The Godfather” crime drama The Place Beyond the Pines. Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, and Eva Mendes are already on board, with Greta Gerwig circling another part. Now the latest addition to his cast is Aussie actor Ben Mendelsohn, who along with Joel Edgerton and Jacki Weaver has been enjoying a nice (and well-deserved) career boost from the success of last year’s Animal Kingdom.

The Place Beyond the Pines focuses on a multi-generational feud sparked by an encounter between Gosling’s character, a pro motorcycle rider who turns to bank robbing to support his family, and Cooper’s character, a cop. Mendes will co-star as Gosling’s love interest, while Gerwig is up for the role of Cooper’s wife. Mendelsohn is in negotiations to play Robin Van Der Zee, a mechanic who pulls Gosling into his bank robbery operation. After watching his terrifying, riveting turn as Hawaiian-shirted uncle Pope in Animal Kingdom, I can’t wait to see what he’ll do with this part.

The Place Beyond the Pines will begin shooting July 25th in Schenectady, NY. [Variety]

After the jump, new parts for Josh Pence (again), Toby Hemingway, and Nia Vardalos.

Two-thirds of the topline creative team of Blue Valentine, director Derek Cianfrance and actor Ryan Gosling, are reuniting for the film The Place Beyond the Pines. Called a “multi-generational crime drama,” the film features a motorcycle stuntman who supports his son by robbing banks, played by Ryan Gosling, who finds his opposite number in police officer Bradley Cooper. Their conflict spirals into something that defines multiple generations.

Derek Cianfrance has drawn inspiration from Jack London and has compared his new film vaguely  to The Deer Hunter. Now he’s moving closer to a place where he could realize that ambitious comparison by expanding the film with a great female cast. Eva Mendes has signed for one role, and Greta Gerwig is circling another. Read More »

Shooting for the Farrelly BrothersThe Three Stooges has already begun in Atlanta, but it seems casting for the film isn’t over quite yet. Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson has just joined in the role of Sister Rosemary, a nun who works at the orphanges where the Stooges grow up. If you’ve been following the project, you’ll recall that her colleagues at the orphange will include Mother Superior, played by Jane Lynch, and Mother Mengele, played by Larry David. I’m going to go ahead and guess that Hudson will be playing the straight man within that holy trio — or as Deadline puts it, “the nice one.”

In addition to Hudson, Lynch, and David, the cast also includes Sean Hayes as Larry, Chris Diamantopoulos as Moe, Will Sasso as Curly, and Sofia Vergara as “a femme fatale.”

After the jump, Bradley Cooper agrees to butt heads with Ryan Gosling, and Rachael Taylor gets paid to sleep with James Marsden.

Well, well, Bradley Cooper really is everywhere today. There’s the possibility that he’ll play Lucifer in Paradise Lost, and a report that The Hangover, Part II is going to be huge. (Duh.) But this is the interesting part: Derek Cianfrance is putting together a film called The Place Beyond the Pines — we first heard about this last year — which will bring him back to set with his Blue Valentine star Ryan Gosling. And the other big role in the film has been offered to Bradley Cooper. Read More »

Blue Valentine director and star Derek Cianfrance and Ryan Gosling could very well make another movie together this year. We first heard about The Place Beyond the Pines last year, when Mr. Cianfrance said that it was inspired by Jack London, and would be a film about “fathers and guns.” Now there is a bit more info that makes the prospect a bit more tantalizing.
