Meryl Streep prevented the cast and crew of The Artist from a total sweep of the major categories at this year’s British Academy Film Awards, presented by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and commonly called the  BAFTAs. Streep won Best Actress for playing former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, and The Artist took Best Film, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Original Music and Best Costume Design.

Here’s the full UK trailer for The Iron Lady, in which Meryl Streep plays a strangely attractive version of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

There’s a lot of fire in Streep’s performance that will will likely overwhelm any complaints about a lack of authenticity. This trailer is a little bit The King’s Speech, and a little bit poppy thanks to the tongue-in-cheek use of ‘Our House’ by Madness, but in general it gets across the idea of Thatcher as a determined and iron-willed leader. We’ve already seen Meryl Streep dressed up as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher for The Iron Lady, and a new teaser for the biopic offers our first glimpse at Streep-as-Thatcher in action. In the clip, two of her colleagues discuss her image before Thatcher cuts in to let them know exactly where she she is and isn’t willing to negotiate. The whole scene is set to, of all things, Clint Mansell’s score for Moon.

Directed by Phyllida Lloyd (Mamma Mia!), The Iron Lady focuses on Thatcher’s days in power leading up to the start of the Falklands War in 1982. Watch the teaser after the jump.
