best directed movies

The Directors Guild of America is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year and it has decided to commemorate this event in a manner most befitting of the internet age: by making a list. More specifically, by polling DGA members and assembling a list of the 80 best-directed movies made since 1936, when the guild was founded. That’s one movie per year.

And like all internet lists, it’s bound to inspire conversation, eye-rolling, yelling, and maybe even a little cheer or two.

the godfather epic

Last night, HBO aired The Godfather Epic, a 424-minute long version of The Godfather and The Godfather Part II that re-edits both films into chronological order and features footage that isn’t in the theatrical cut of either film. It will air again on January 23, but it’s currently available to stream on HBO Go and HBO Now.

But here’s the thing: you probably shouldn’t watch this version, especially if it’s your first exposure to these movies. This cut is a fascinating curiosity for devoted fans, but it’s also the worst possible way to experience two of the greatest movies ever made.

Laurent Durieux Godfather II header

As a film fan, one of the eternal debates is The Godfather vs. The Godfather Part II. Both films won Best Picture and both films are all time classics. No one is disputing that. But forced to choose one, do you choose the rise of Michael Corleone as his father, Don Vito Corleone, passes on? Or do you choose the epic dual story of the Corleone family’s beginning, with Vito’s rise to power, alongside its expansion, as Michael broadens and splits the family? It’s a Catch 22, Sophie’s Choice if ever there was one and a debate that’s sure to go on forever.

On the poster side, though, this debate has been closed.

Last year, Odd City Entertainment debuted their official Godfather license with a beautiful piece by Laurent Durieux. Today, they’ve revealed part two of the poster trilogy, also by Durieux. And no knock on the artist himself, but his version of The Godfather Part II blows the original away. See the full Laurent Durieux Godfather Part II poster, and get all the details, below. A couple weeks back, we posted the schedule for the Alamo Drafthouse’s 2010 Rolling Road Show. The traveling movie screening series just one of the many reasons the Alamo Drafthouse is the greatest movie theater on the planet. For those who don’t know, the Drafthouse travels around the United States to present one-time-only screenings of classic films using a portable movie theater which they set-up in famous locations from the films. This year’s line-up includes Jackie Brown, Dirty Harry, There Will Be Blood, Convoy, The Blues Brothers, Robocop, Rocky I-III, On The Waterfront, and The Godfather Part II.

To promote each of the screenings, Alamo has commissioned UK artist Olly Moss to create posters for each of the screenings. We’ve featured Moss many times on the site in the past (Locke inspired Lost poster and t-shirt, The Evil Dead Poster), and is probably best known for his popular t-shirt designs which have spread across the interwebs (the Spoilers t-shirt and a series of retro movie poster remakes that we previously featured in Cool Stuff, and Shoot The Baddies). Hit the jump to see Moss’ awesome designs for the Rolling Roadshow films, along with more information about the upcoming events.
