Rats of NIMH series

The children’s book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH has been adapted to film once before. When Don Bluth and his compatriots broke away from Disney to form their own animation studio in the late ’70s their first feature effort was The Secret of NIMH, which adapted the book. (And did so pretty liberally in some ways.) Now MGM has picked up rights to Robert C. O’Brien‘s book, and plans a new hybrid live-action/animated Rats of NIMH series. Read More »

Mr. Holmes Trailer

The latest screen incarnation of Sherlock Holmes is a somewhat unusual one. In Mr. Holmes, Ian McKellen plays Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective very late in life, and finds him looking back at an unsolved case even as his own faculties begin to falter. Bill Condon directs, and when it premiered in Berlin earlier this year the reviews were very kind to the film. And let’s be honest — the idea of McKellen playing Holmes at any age is great, and something we’re eager to see. We’ve seen one clip from the movie, but now here’s the first Mr. Holmes trailer.

Oscars Academy Awards

After five to ten years of five to ten Best Picture nominees, the Oscars are eyeing a return to old ways. The Academy reportedly wants to shrink the Best Picture pool back down to five nominees.

The rule limiting nominees to five had been in place since the mid-1940s, but was changed in 2009 to include 10 nominees, and then again in 2011 to include 5-10 nominees. Now it might change again. More on the possible Oscars Best Picture nominees rule change after the jump.  Read More »

dust game movie

Lionsgate has acquired the big screen rights to Fantasy Flight Games’ popular sci-fi strategy board and miniature game series Dust and announced that Rawson Marshall Thurber will be directing the movie adaptation for producer Dan Lin (The Lego Movie, Sherlock Holmes).

I almost included this game in my list of board game movies that Hollywood should make next, but did not know enough about the game itself. I’ve never played it, but the art has always stood out to me. The story is set in an alternate history steampunk-themed version of the 1940s where World War II never ended and the world is divided into three sides: the Allies (the US, the Commonwealth, and the French colonies); the Axis (not led by Hitler); and the SSU, a union of the USSR and China. In this landscape the discovery of a new alien resource allows our scientists to create cool-looking combat mechs for this new battle.
