If you’re more interested in the typical fall slate of festival entrees than summer’s glut of tentpole action fare, this is a great week. The Toronto International Film Festival announced the first wave of films that will play the fest in September. This is a batch of about 50 titles, which makes up only a small chunk of the programming. Usually TIFF features between two and three hundred films. But these are some of the highest-profile entries.

Below you’ll find rundowns on the new films from George Clooney, Bennett Miller, Jay & Mark Duplass, Todd Solondz, Francis Ford Coppola, Cameron Crowe, Sarah Polley, Fernando Meirelles, Lars von Trier, Marc Forster, Steve McQueen, Alexander Payne, and Lynne Ramsay. No announcement yet of the Midnight Madness programming choices, always some of my faves, but this is a great start. Read More »

It has been seven long years since Alexander Payne last had a film in theaters. He’s done a lot of work since Sideways, producing some films (Cedar Rapids) and television (Hung) and working to develop quite a few projects. He spent some significant time on the film Downsizing, which was shelved late in development; that’s when he jumped at making The Descendants with George Clooney. This one is right in Payne’s wheelhouse: the story of a father dealing with his two daughters after an accident leaves his wife terrible injured. While trying to get back into being a proper father, he discovers that his wife had been having an affair, and things get emotional from there.

The first trailer has landed, and fans of Alexander Payne’s previous films will probably love it. Everyone else should check it out just for a brief bit featuring Robert Forster. Read More »

Daniel Radcliffe, George Clooney and a robot arm are all ready for their close up. Three new posters for anticipated 2011 releases popped up online today, all utilizing a large, singular image. There’s the arm rising up from a knockout for Shawn Levy‘s robot boxing film Real Steel, starring Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly and Anthony Mackie opening October 7, a gruff and tough Harry Potter, ready to finish his feud with Lord Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow Part Two, directed by David Yates, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and pretty much everyone else who has been in a previous Potter movie. It opens July 15. Then George Clooney enjoys Hawaii in Alexander Payne‘s highly anticipated December 16 release, The Descendants. Check out the posters after the jump. Read More »

If you woke up this morning hoping to see George Clooney run around Hawaii like an idiot, well, you’re in luck. The first clip of Clooney in Alexander Payne‘s long overdue follow-up to the 2004 Oscar winner Sideways, The Descendants, has just come online, teasing a website about the film called Who Is He? Cool Posts From Around the Web:

Good news for Drive Angry 3D, the new film from Patrick Lussier that already starred Nicolas Cage and, one would presume, a lot of cars: William Fichtner and Amber Heard are both joining the cast. The appeal of both should go without saying; too bad All the Boys Love Mandy Lane hasn’t had a proper US release, so most of you will have to think of Heard’s zombie appearance in Zombieland and her largely un-clothed work in the utterly awful The Informers.

What’s Drive Angry 3D about? Cage is a man “driven by rage who is chasing the people who killed his daughter and kidnapped her baby. The vendetta/rescue spins out of control as the chase gets bloodier by the mile, leaving bodies strewn along the highway.” Sounds like a feature-length expansion of the amazingly well-staged highway sequence from Final Destination 2. In 3D. You make the call about whether that’s good or bad. [B-D]

After the break, Lucy Punch joins Bad Teacher and Shailene Woodley joins The Descendants. Read More »

Variety isn’t the only organization that can bury info in reports. Hawaii does it, too! Down at the end of the long press release trumpeting Hawaii as the filming location for Pirates of the Caribbean 4 is a minor nugget about Alexander Payne. The director is currently in pre-production on The Descendants, which will indeed star George Clooney as recently rumored. Read More »

I’m currently feeling a bit overloaded on George Clooney, what with his upcoming roles in The Men Who Stare at Goats, Up in the Air, and Fantastic Mr. Fox. After not seeing him on the big screen since Burn After Reading, it now feels like we’re facing an onslaught on Clooney projects. Now, we may be able to add yet another one to the mix. Clooney is apparently eying the lead in Alexander Payne’s upcoming Hawaii-based family dramedy, The Descendants, which is based on the novel of the same name by Kaui Hart Hemmings.
