It’s not often you’ll see Piranha 3DD and Anna Karenina mentioned in the same breath, but every film needs a release date, no matter how trashy or elegant. After the jump, check out new release dates for those two movies, plus Henry Cavill‘s The Cold Light of Day, Robert Pattinson‘s Bel Ami, and the comedy Lola Versus.

Here’s an international trailer for the thriller The Cold Light of Day, in which Henry Cavill (The Tudors, Immortals, Man of Steel) discovers that his father, played by Bruce Willis, is actually involved in international espionage. As we’ve discussed before, the film looks a bit like a more grown-up version of the story told in the Taylor Lautner vehicle Abduction. Hopefully it will fare a bit better overall. People have been talking about Abduction a bit today, because of the tangentially-related news about Stretch Armstrong dumping Taylor Lautner and going to a new studio home at Relativity. Which, strangely, makes today a good one for the arrival of the trailer for another film in which a son discovers that his parents are connected to something secret and potentially violent.
This film is called The Cold Light of Day. It is a thriller directed by Mabrouk El Mechri (JCVD), in which Henry Cavill (The Tudors, Immortals, Man of Steel) is on vacation with his family, but returns to find them gone. Turns out his dad (Bruce Willis) is actually CIA, and Cavill’s character is caught in the middle of a violent information exchange driven in part by Sigourney Weaver. Check out the trailer below. Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver have joined the cast of JCVD helmer Mabrouk El Mechri‘s kidnapping thriller called The Cold Light of Day. Willis and Weaver join the previously announced Henry Cavill from The Tudors along for the ride. The plot follows a cocky young Wall Street trader whose family is kidnapped while vacationing in Spain. He’s left with only a few hours to find them, he must unravel the government conspiracy, figure out the connection between their disappearance and his father’s secrets.
THR reports that Willis will play Cavill’s father and Weaver will play the villain. The script was originally written by Scott Wiper and John Petro, and Richard Price (Clockers, The Wire) is doing a last ‘production pass’ on the recent draft. I’m excited by both Price and El Mechri’s involvement in this project, although the plot logline sounds rather generic. The movie is gearing up to begin production in Spain on September 6th 2010.
A lot of people might not recognize the name Mabrouk El Mechri, but I bet a lot of you recognize the name of his last film: JCVD. He’s finally about to follow up that film with a kidnapping thriller called The Cold Light of Day, which was announced earlier this year. And he’s got Henry Cavill from The Tudors along for the ride. Some of the early big pictures for Summit Entertainment was involved in were thrillers: Memento, Vanilla Sky and Insomnia. But the company has courted kids lately with Twilight, Sorority Row and Sex Drive. But the company hasn’t ruled out making fantasy films for adults — Summit has just picked up a script called The Cold Light of Day, by writers Scott Wiper and John Petro, which the company will co-finance and distribute.
