That bird watching movie now has a trailer and apparently it’s about more than just bird watching. The Big Year stars Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson as three friends who decide to take a year off from the lives and do the things they’ve always wanted to do. The Devil Wears Prada and Marley & Me director David Frankel has a new comedy coming out later this year that centers around an energetic subculture: bird watchers. OK, perhaps not so energetic. Cinema Con, formerly known as ShoWest, is currently going down in Las Vegas and in addition to screening a ton of footage from upcoming movies, many studios are premiering photos and posters from their upcoming films. 20th Century Fox, for example, created a calendar for the event and it provides our first look at several of their upcoming movies including Cameron Crowe’s We Bought a Zoo, Alexander Payne’s The Descandants, Andrew Niccol’s Now, David Gordon Green’s The Sitter, David Frankel’s The Big Year and more. With nary a photo, poster or trailer in sight for Rupert Wyatt‘s Planet of the Apes prequel, Caesar: Rise of the Apes, word has come down that 20th Century Fox has moved the release date out of the super-crowded summer back to November 23.
So you’ll have to wait to Thanksgiving to watch the beginning of the end of the world with Andy Serkis as a CGI ape and humans James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Brian Cox and Tom Felton.

Steve Martin is in talks to join Jack Black and Owen Wilson in Marley & Me/The Devil Wears Prada helmer David Franke‘s bird-watching comedy The Big Year. Martin’s role was originally set to be played by Dustin Hoffman.
The film is based on Mark Obmascik‘s 2004 book The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession which chronicles three top contenders in the 1998 American Big Year: one of the wackiest competitions in the US, where hundreds of bird watchers compete with the hopes of spotting the most species during the course of a year. The screenplay was adapted by Antitrust/The Man Who Knew Too Little scribe Howard Franklin.
