The first weekend of theatrical releases in 2017 arrives in just a couple days, but since it’s January, we’re still getting rollover from awards season mixed with garbage that doesn’t deserve a release date at any other time. So we’re already looking forward to some of the more exciting movie releases coming this year, and the movies that I’m looking forward to the most range from blockbuster sequels to movies from filmmakers who haven’t delivered a new film in a few years.

In theory, weddings are joyful celebrations of love and community. You’re thrilled to see two people you care about commit to one another, while surrounded by the warm embrace of their friends and family. In practice, though, they’re very often recipes for awkwardness. You find yourself stuck at a table of people you barely know, making stilted small talk while trying to avoid humiliating run-ins with exes and frenemies. That’s the situation Anna Kendrick finds herself in in Table 19, the new comedy from Spellbound and Rocket Scientist director Jeffrey Blitz.
Written by Mark and Jay Duplass, Table 19 follows a woman who was supposed to be the maid of honor at a wedding, with her boyfriend serving as the best man. When the couple breaks up, she’s relieved of her duties, but decides to come to the wedding anyway. She’s stuck at table 19: the one furthest from the bride and groom, filled with random people who don’t really fit in at any of the other tables. Lisa Kudrow, Craig Robinson, June Squibb, Stephen Merchant, and Tony Revolori play the other members table 19, while Wyatt Russell is Kendrick’s ex. Watch the first Table 19 trailer below.

Update from Editor Peter Sciretta: Table 19 is a project I’ve been tracking since 2009.
Originally The Duplass Brothers were set to direct their script for Fox Searchlight and producer Jason Reitman, but director Jeffrey Blitz will be helming the movie instead, and he is now reuniting with his Rocket Science star Anna Kendrick. There is so much awesome in that last sentence, and I’m very excited to see this movie finally come to fruition. The film, which begins shooting next week in Atlanta, also stars Craig Robinson, Lisa Kudrow, Stephen Merchant, Tony Revolori, June Squibb, Wyatt Russell and Amanda Crew.

Variety has an article tonight about how Reitman has set up a new production shingle in West Hollywood called Right Away Films, where he will develop projects inhouse to direct, or possibly produce. Hidden far into the article is a list of projects that Right of Way Films is currently developing. We’ve done some research, and put together some of the details. Let’s take a look at some of the projects that might be Reitman’s next:

Production Weekly have tweeted that Table 19, the third feature from Mark and Jay Duplass, has been set up at Fox Searchlight. If you’re asking “Mark and Jay who?” then I’d strongly encourage you to play catch up with a DVD session or two.
The slim sliver of premise that Production Weekly could fit into their Tweet read like this:
The Duplass Bros. ensemble comedy Table 19, has been setup @foxsearchlight – about the wedding guests who get stuck at the singles table.
