We could be getting a third Trainspotting film, though it wouldn’t necessarily be called T3, nor even be directed by Danny Boyle. But the T2: Trainspotting director says there’s potential for a Trainspotting extended universe if volatile, fan-favorite character Begbie (Robert Carlyle) gets a spin-off movie.

T2 Trainspotting (yes, that’s still the title) doesn’t start hitting most theaters until February and March, but it will debut in U.K. theaters on January 27, 2017. With that release date right around the corner, the first wave of reviews for Danny Boyle‘s sequel to his 1996 classic have arrived and they’re mixed but mostly positive. Renton (Ewan McGregor) hasn’t visited home in 20 years. He no longer takes heroin, but he’s a bit lost, feeling guilty over leaving his friends behind. Spud (Ewen Bremner), who still struggles with drugs and life, is one of those dear friends Renton returns home to help in director Danny Boyle‘s long-awaited sequel, T2 Trainspotting.

Even the most die hard fans of Danny Boyle‘s cult classic drug-fueled drama Trainspotting are skeptical about whether or not the filmmaker can craft a worthy follow-up to the beloved movie. The teaser trailer does provide hope though as even the visuals perfectly capture the vibe of the original movie, promising a thematic sequel as much as a narrative one.
Now we get a little more information about what we can expect from one of the returning characters from the original movie as a new T2 Trainspotting featurette focuses on Ewan McGregor as Renton, who no longer rides the H-train, but has found a new addiction in its place. Last week, the first teaser trailer for T2: Trainspotting arrived, giving a glimpse into the sequel that director Danny Boyle has been talking about for years. We finally get to see what Renton (Ewan McGregor), Spud (Ewen Bremner), Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller) and Begbie (Robert Carlyle) are up to all these years later.
It remains to be seen if Danny Boyle can capture the same magic that made his first film such a beloved piece of cinema. But if you’re a fan of the original Trainspoitting, you can probably take solace in how Boyle has emulated plenty of visuals from the first movie, and that’s just in the trailer alone.
