David Chen’s Top 10 Films of 2016

screen-shot-2016-12-23-at-8-39-29-am

This is a year where you had to work to see great films. Unlike last year, the vast majority of my favorite movies of 2016 weren’t movies that received wide releases, nor were they films that earned over $50 million at the box office. Instead, they were often quieter releases that I had to read up on in order to make sure I caught them during the 1-2 weeks they were playing in my city.

The good news is, if you did the work, you were richly rewarded. While the movie industry as a whole is not doing so hot, movies as a form of storytelling still feel as vital as ever. What follows are my top 10 movies of 2016.  Read More »

2017 Independent Spirit Awards Nominations

We’re heading into the heart of awards season, and first out of the gate with accolades to go around is Film Independent with the 2017 Independent Spirit Awards nominations, honoring achievements in the world of indie cinema. This year the nominations seem to be spread out quite a bit, though there were a couple clear leaders in the number of nominations.

Both Moonlight from Barry Jenkins and American Honey from Andrea Arnold came away with six nominations each, including Best Feature and Best Director. Other nominees spread across various categories include the Sundance sensation Manchester by the Sea, the first lady biopic Jackie, the comedic drama Other People, the quirky farting corpse comedy Swiss Army Man, and plenty of other movies that you simply must seek out.

Swiss Army Man featurette

Daniel Radcliffe has shown that he’s not afraid to get nude for the sake of art, with his performance in a stage production of Equus back in the late 2000s. However, when it comes to the big screen, he’s not one to flaunt his body around. But in Swiss Army Man, his bare ass proves to be a valuable asset (pun not intended) as the flatulence of his character’s corpse helps Paul Dano survive in the woods. And in addition to his gas serving a purpose, Daniel Radcliffe’s penis turns out to be immensely helpful as well.

A new Swiss Army Man featurette takes a look at some of the practical effects used in the indie hitting more theaters this weekend, and there’s a special focus on Radcliffe’s animatronic penis. This was actually teased in the featurette released earlier this week about the creation of the dummy body used in the movie. Find out all about the magical appendage after the jump. Read More »

Swiss Army Man Featurette

The buzzed-about Sundance-selected indie Swiss Army Man got a limited release last weekend, and it will be expanding to more theaters this weekend. The film has infamously been called the “farting corpse” movie because that’s exactly what is prominently featured. Bringing even more attention to the movie is the fact that the corpse in question is played by none other than Harry Potter franchise star Daniel Radcliffe. Now you get to see how his corpse stand-in was created in a new Swiss Army Man featurette that you can watch after the jump. Read More »

Swiss Army Man

Note: With Swiss Army Man in limited release this weekend, we’re re-running our review from the Sundance Film Festival.

About five minutes into Swiss Army Man, you’re faced with a choice. By this point in the film, you’ll have seen Hank (Paul Dano), a man stranded alone on a desert island, try to hang himself. His suicide attempt is interrupted by the arrival of a corpse (Daniel Radcliffe) that proves to be a prolific farter. Hank opts not to kill himself, and instead rides “Manny” like a flatulence-powered jet ski in the direction of civilization.

The scene is weird, and absurd, and crude, and dark, but kind of beautiful, too, and it’s at this point you have to make a decision: Either you’re willing to go with a movie that delights in all of those unsavory qualities, or you’re not. If you decide you’re not, know that Swiss Army Man will only get stranger and ruder, and you’re probably better off putting it back on the shelf until you’re in the mood for it. If you decide you are, however, you’ll discover a unique, oddly gorgeous adventure anchored by a superb performance from Radcliffe as a dead body (no, really).  Read More »

Swiss Army Man Tour

If you haven’t heard of the movie Swiss Army Man yet, do yourself a favor and watch the red band trailer right here. Pretty weird, right? Even though the movie was dubbed as the “farting corpse movie” when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival back in January, prompting some audiences to walk out of the movie, there’s much more to it that flatulence and oddities. Sure, the movie is a strange one, but it also has a lot of heart and tells an original story.

Now in an effort to help promote the movie, A24 is sending co-star Daniel Radcliffe on a strange promotional tour in a handful of major US cities with his own dead body for everyone to see. Find out more about the Swiss Army Man tour stops below. Read More »
