Here is the trailer for James Gunn‘s weird and probably, as the quote suggests, very inappropriate super hero movie Super. Rainn Wilson looks like he is perfectly cast as a guy who creates a costumed alter-ego after his hot wife (Liv Tyler) dumps him for a drug dealer (Kevin Bacon). Ellen Page is the young girl who becomes his too-eager sidekick after helping instruct him on the basics of superheroes and we even get a peek at Nathan Fillion as The Holy Avenger. James Gunn made his film Super, starring Rainn Wilson as an average guy who creates a costumed alter-ego after his wife (Liv Tyler) leaves him for a drug dealer (Kevin Bacon), on a tiny budget and with a great deal of freedom. There’s something appropriate about the story of a weird, homegrown ‘superhero’ becoming a weird, homegrown movie. I find the film’s promise of uncomfortable humor and l0w-budget violence appealing, and think this poster captures some of the film’s spirit perfectly. As the year comes to an end, anybody and everybody are posting their best of the year lists. Most of these lists contain variations of the same 15 or 20 films. To break the mold, some are even posting lists of the best films of the year that you probably haven’t seen. I find that even these lists are filled with the same movies. And if you’re a film geek reading a site like /Film, chances are you know about most of the movies on these lists.
I wanted to do something different and compile a list of the best films of the year that you’ve never heard of. The selections should be movies that (for the most part) none of your family or friends have heard of, and you might even have to do some extra legwork to get your hands on.

Briefly: IFC Films snapped up James Gunn‘s film Super at the Toronto Film Festival, and now the picture has a release date. The dark, strange comedy will hit theaters on April 1, 2011.
April Fool’s Day may be a very appropriate release date for a film about a guy (Rainn Wilson) who becomes a low-rent superhero called the Crimson Bolt when his wife (Liv Tyler) leaves him for a drug dealer (Kevin Bacon). Ellen Page stars as the young woman who becomes his sidekick. Early clips have shown that the movie has a pretty sick sense of humor, and James Gunn promises that it isn’t a run of the mill hero movie, and that it also probably isn’t for everyone. Personally, I’m really looking forward to the film, and am happy that James Gunn got to make something weird and fun on a super-low budget, and still is able to get it into theaters.
