the predator cast

The original 1987 Predator is one of those movies that I can’t stop watching once I see a frame of it. If John McTiernan’s action/horror/science fiction classic is on a screen near me, I will be drawn into its gravitational pull. There’s a special power in how it builds an atmosphere of macho excess before quickly nicking the whole thing, taking deranged pleasure in watching an ensemble of tough guys get completely obliterated for by an alien for two hours.

So while the Predator itself is important in a Predator movie, its victims are even more important. So when director Shane Black (of The Nice Guys and Iron Man 3 fame) reveals the cast of the latest sequel, we should take note. Are we going to like these people enough to watch them get blown to pieces by an extraterrestrial menace that sees them as nothing more than trophies to be mounted on a spaceship wall?

sterling k. brown

Sterling K. Brown is having a moment. He won a well-deserved Emmy for playing prosecutor Christopher Darden in American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson, a tricky role that required him to radiate intelligence and charisma while also portraying a man who makes all kinds of poor choices. He immediately followed that with a lead role on This is Us, which has become a big hit for NBC. And like any actor having a moment, he’s been sucked into the world of comic book movies with a role in the upcoming Black Panther.

Green Lantern Sterling K. Brown

Of all the films on the upcoming DCEU slate, Green Lantern Corps might be the most mysterious. Yes, it’s got a release date — and, as of last week, screenwriters — but not much more than that. We don’t know who’ll direct it, who’ll star, or what the story will be.

In the absence of any concrete information, then, let’s engage in the time-honored traditions of wishful thinking and wild speculation. First up, actor Sterling K. Brown has also noticed Green Lantern Corps has yet to cast any leads, and would like to throw his hat into the ring. And next, director Duncan Jones — who, to be very clear, is not officially associated with the film in any way that we know of — has some thoughts on how to make the story interesting.  Read More »

This Is Us

I hadn’t initially planned on seeing This Is Us, Dan Fogelman’s new NBC drama. The billboards and advertising plastered around Los Angeles made it look uninteresting. I’m not against television dramas, I loved Parenthood and Friday Night Lights (although the advertising for those shows didn’t interest me either, it was the buzz from friends that brought me to them). And then the This Is Us reviews came out just before its premiere teasing a big unexpected twist at the end of the pilot episode. Okay, you got me. So I watched it and I have a few thoughts on the matter. Also, Dan Fogelman has done some interviews explaining what the twist will mean for the rest of the series, so if you’re curious about that, join me.
