WILD CARD - First Look Image

Whatever you think of Jason Statham‘s movies, you can’t deny that Jason Statham works hard. He typically has at least a couple movies per year, and next year he has three. The first is Wild Card, a remake of the 1986 Burt Reynolds-starrer Heat. (Not to be confused with the 1995 Michael Mann movie Heat or 2013′s The Heat.)

Statham stars as a Las Vegas bodyguard who gets in hot water with a powerful mob boss. Michael Angarano, Sofia Vergara, Jason Alexander, Hope Davis, and Stanley Tucci also star. Watch the Wild Card trailer after the jump. Read More »

Reese Witherspoon Sofia Vergara

For a long time, the buddy action comedy was almost exclusively a male thing. Then, last summer, Paul Feig made The Heat and proved to Hollywood that a team of two women could be just as awesome and profitable. Next Summer we’re getting a similar movie.

Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara are set to co-star in a buddy action comedy formerly called Don’t Mess With Texas. It’s currently untitled. Anne Fletcher (The Guilt Trip, The Proposal) will direct from a script by David Feeney and John Quaintance. Filming starts this month and it’ll be released May 8, 2015. Chef trailer

Jon Favreau returns to his roots with the upcoming comedy Chef. He wrote, directed and starred in the film, which tells the story of a chef who tackles his own independent food truck after being unhappy with his more traditional restaurant job. The film is a far cry from Favreau’s latest work, the Iron Man films and Cowboys and Aliens. That’s surely by design. He hasn’t skimped on the talented cast, though, which includes Robert Downey, Jr., Sofia Vergara, John Leguizamo, Bobby Cannavale, Dustin Hoffman, Oliver Platt, and Scarlett Johansson.

The film opens May 9, check out the Chef trailer below. Read More »

Chef (4)

When Jon Favreau released the first Iron Man, he was still seen as an exciting young director on his way up despite having credits like Made, Elf, and Zathura. Then came Iron Man 2 and Cowboys & Aliens, and his name started to elicit more eye-rolls than smiles. But at SXSW this year, he unveiled what seems to be a return to form: a crowd-pleasing indie called Chef.

In it, Favreau plays a once-acclaimed chef rebuilding his life after a heavily YouTubed incident sends his career on the skids. He’s also dealing with a gorgeous ex-wife (Sofia Vergara) and an adorable moppet of a son (Emjay Anthony). So how does this latest effort stack up against some of Favreau’s critically scorned tentpole output? Get the word from SXSW and check out some first-look photos after the jump.

fading-gigolo-trailer-2

Is it weird to watch Woody Allen working as a self-styled pimp, given his own, er, unusual sexual history? Maybe so, and perhaps that just makes this new trailer for John Turturro‘s film Fading Gigolo more, er, striking. I keep waiting for the whole thing to be revealed as an extended dream sequence, given that the plot has the Normal Guy played by Turturro turning into a $1000-per night gigolo thanks to the efforts of his pal, played by Allen. We’re given an intro via two gorgeous women (Sharon Stone and Sofía Vergara) who want a threesome, with Vergara even offering up that “a woman is meant to be looked at.” Seriously.

Lest you think this is all just a self-serving wish-fulfillment act from Turturro, note that The Playlist called the film “odd, uneven and yet engaging” after its premiere at TIFF, and noted that the best parts of the picture turn up via Turturro’s relationship with a widow played by Vanessa Paradis.  That makes it sound like some reality does tap the main character on the shoulder sooner or later, which may be good to know. in the meantime, take in the new trailer below. Machete Kills (9)

3D trailers are great if you’re watching them in a 3D movie theater with your 3D glasses on, but so-called 3D trailers on the Internet usually aren’t anything special. Since the effects don’t work on our computers, most “3D trailers” just turn out to be 2D trailers with action-packed scenes that we can sorta-kinda picture looking exciting in 3D.

But leave it to Robert Rodriguez‘s gleefully over-the-top Machete Kills to go over-the-top with its 3D Internet trailer. No, not even the world’s toughest ex-Federale can make your laptop suddenly support 3D technology. But he can offer a video with explosions so big, they can’t be contained by your average video player. See what we mean after the jump.

‘Machete Kills’ Red-Band Trailer #2

the-women-of-machete-kills

At this point you probably know what the Robert Rodriguez film Machete Kills is all about, so a new red-band trailer is just a mid-week distraction. But if you’re looking for the sort of distraction that involves wild violence, exploitative action, and a knife fight with Mel Gibson, this is going to be perfect.

This sequel to Machete is a cavalcade of stars, or at least of personality. Danny Trejo returns as ex-Federale Machete, and Gibson is a bad-guy arms dealer, Charlie Sheen (aka Carlos Estevez) is the President of the United States, and Amber HeardMichelle RodriguezSofía VergaraLady Gaga, and Cuba Gooding Jr. all show up. That’s not even the whole of the cast.

Machete Kills opens in October, but it premieres this Thursday as the opening night selection of Fantastic Fest. We’ll have a report after that premiere. Read More »
