If you grew up in the Eighties, Chris Columbus‘ 1987 comedy Adventures in Babysitting was one of your go-to films. It starred Elizabeth Shue as a babysitter who winds up getting into some crazy situations with three kids she’s supposed to be babysitting. The film did okay at the box office upon release but became a staple of sleepovers, parties, and TV viewing after that. For many, it’s one of the definitive kid adventure films of the Eighties.
Rumblings of a remake of the film has been around for the better part of the decade. On this very site, Peter got very, very mad about Raven Symone potentially starring in a film called Further Adventures in Babysitting back in 2007. Well, Raven has aged out of it but the idea stays the same and now that movie is actually happening. The upcoming Disney Channel Original movie, Descendants, has a fantastic idea. We know all the heroes of Disney movies live happily ever after, but the villains don’t die. So what happens to them? In Descendants, we learn all the villains have been exiled to the Isle of the Lost. When the new King of the Kingdom, the son of Belle and the Beast, takes the throne, he offers the kids of the villains a chance to redeem themselves. So the teenaged kids of Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, the Evil Queen from Snow White, Jafar from Aladdin and Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians leave the Isle and join prep school alongside the kids of Disney heroes.
Casting is complete and now Disney has released the first image of the four stars of the film. Below see Mal, the daughter of Maleficent, played by Dove Cameron; Evie, daughter of the Evil Queen, played by Sofia Carson; Jay, son of Jafar, played by Booboo Stewart; and Carlos, son of Cruella de Vil, played by Cameron Boyce. Not to be confused with Oscar-winner The Descendants, Disney’s Descendants is the latest live-action Disney Channel movie that’s turning Disney tradition on its head. The film, directed by Kenny Ortega, is about the offspring of several imprisoned Disney villains. A new prince gives the children of Sleeping Beauty‘s Maleficent, Aladdin‘s Jafar, Snow White‘s Evil Queen and 101 Dalmatians’ Cruella de Vil a chance to choose a path different from their parents. It’ll air on Disney Channel in 2015.
Kristin Chenoweth was recently cast as Maleficent and now the other three supporting baddies have been cast. Comedian Maz Jobrani is Jafar, whose son Jay is played by X-Men: Days of Future Past co-star Booboo Stewart. Sister Act actress Kathy Najimy is the Evil Queen and her daughter Evie is a newcomer named Sofia Carson. Then Steve Harvey Show star Wendy Raquel Robinson is Cruella de Vil.
