“The path to paradise begins in hell,” the Alien: Covenant trailer ominously declares as the crew members on the colony ship Covenent prepare to get slaughtered. The new poster for Ridley Scott‘s second Alien prequel certainly hits that theme on the nose, with a dark, disturbing poster reminiscent of Renaissance paintings of angels and demons. the martian extended cut

Ridley Scott‘s extended cuts can be somewhat hit or miss. The longer versions of American Gangster and Robin Hood, for example, mostly just added more minutes to the running time. Neither version proved to be the Kingdom of Heaven: Director’s Cut, a fantastic cut that contains all the nuances lost in the theatrical version.

Last year we heard rumblings about an extended cut of The Martian, and it’s been confirmed that later this year we might see Scott’s longer version of the adaptation.

Matt Damon in The Martian

The Martian represents Sir Ridley Scott‘s grand return to science-fiction and what a return. Unfortunately, the director behind Blade Runner and Alien was not nominated for Best Director at the Academy Awards. But that’s no matter, as his inspiring, exciting, and funny “comedy” (as the Golden Globes called it) will stand the test of time. Drew Goddard‘s (The Cabin in the Woods) script features some of the best material the director has worked with in years and while the screenwriter did a tremendous job adapting Andy Weir‘s novel, but it wasn’t always easy for the screenwriter.
