No, we haven’t time-travelled back to 1980 but yes, The Empire Strikes Back is back in the box office top ten in the United Kingdom. The reason? Secret Cinema kicked off their latest event, centered on the classic Star Wars sequel, earlier this week. As if Star Wars fans weren’t having a good enough year, things just got better. We’re already getting a new movie, and all the awesomeness that goes along with that (trailers, toys, discussion, etc.). There’s a convention, a great new TV show, multiple comic book series’ and so much more. Now, almost like a cherry on top, an ultimate screening of the best Star Wars film ever has been announced.
Secret Cinema has announced that their next film is The Empire Strikes Back and screenings will take place from June 4 until August 2 in London, England. Why is this a big deal? Outdoor movie screenings are so much fun. They’re not usually the ideal place to first see a movie, of course, but as a communal experience, where everyone knows the movie, it’s the best. Secret Cinema, however, is so much more than an outdoor screening series. It’s an outdoor screening coupled with a live performance and theme park experience where you not only watch the movie, you can live it.
Don’t know what we mean? A new video showing this past summer’s Back to the Future Secret Cinema event puts it into perspective. The organization not only rebuilt the town of Hill Valley; they have actors walking around, a beautiful big screening, and people performing the movie, under the movie, while you watch the movie. Normally, U.S. film fans have it pretty good. The events and festivals that take place between the Atlantic and the Pacific are pretty much unprecedented. There are rare exceptions, though, and one is Secret Cinema. The UK company plans movie experiences where you not only see a movie, you live it. For example, when UK fans went to see Back to the Future they did so in a full recreation of Hill Valley. Dozens of working stores, the school, the clock tower and 74 actors made the movie itself almost a secondary thing.
Well, it turns out the United States is getting that experience soon. Secret Cinema has revealed that they’ll bring their Back to the Future screening to Los Angeles in 2015 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the film. Read More »
