Scott Cooper

You may remember that one of the films about Whitey Bulger that has been making its way to the screen is Black Mass. If things had gone a different way than they did in the end, Barry Levinson would be shooting it soon with Johnny Depp in the lead role and Joel Edgerton supporting. But the budget ballooned, the producers tried to cut costs, and when Depp was asked to slash his asking price, he bailed. The movie effectively died then.

Now Out of the Furnace and Crazy Heart director Scott Cooper is in early talks to revive the film. And Deadline says that Depp could come back to work with him. What ruthless irony it would be if Depp took less money this time out than he had originally planned to under Levinson.

The film was set in motion by a Mark Mallouk script based on the book ‘Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob’ by Dick Lehr and Gerald O’Neill. Cooper would rewrite, but hopefully he’ll stick to the core story, in which Bulger consolidated his power by working as an FBI informant who turned over info on his rivals through collusion with a childhood friend who ended up in the Bureau.

Out of the Furnace

Scott Cooper‘s star-studded drama Out of the Furnace has, so far, been a box office disappointment. Despite the Oscar-caliber cast and crew, the film has grossed only $10 million since its December 4 release. Now, to rub even more salt in the wound, the filmmakers are being sued by seventeen Ramapough Indians who “feel embarrassed and humiliated because of false representations” the film makes about people who live in Ramapo Mountains of northern New Jersey.  Read More »

Scott Cooper

Scott Cooper isn’t a director with mainstream interests. His first film, Crazy Heart, was about a grizzled old musician; it won an Oscar for Jeff Bridges. His second film, Out of the Furnace, tells a methodical story of crime and revenge set in and around a blue collar Pennsylvania town during 2008, just as the American economy began to crap the bed. Christian Bale stars at Russ, a man with plenty of hardship in his life, who is forced to deal with even more problems when his brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) disappears. Throughout, Cooper is interested in the setting and characters, and subtly suggesting information to an audience, instead of huge setpieces and obvious reveals.

We spoke to Cooper about the difficulties of bringing a smaller story like this to the big screen. We also talked about how he changed the original screenplay, the rising trend of rural noir, some of the film’s questionable decisions and ultimately why he decided not to make The Stand. Scott Cooper Leaves WB’s ‘The Stand’ Adaptation

the-stand-header

Briefly: The Warner Bros. adaptation of Stephen King’s massive novel The Stand has become something of a revolving door project for creatives. Harry Potter screenwriter/director pair Steve Kloves and David Yates were on board at one point, but gave way to Ben Affleck after some time in development. Then Affleck moved on, and Scott Cooper, of Crazy Heart and the upcoming Out of the Furnace, came on to rewrite and direct.

Now Cooper has bailed, too. Read More »

Out of the Furnace

Woody Harrelson‘s last feature role was as a time-traveling turkey in the animated family flick Free Birds, but don’t let that trick you into thinking he’s lost his edge. The new TV spot for Scott Cooper‘s Out of the Furnace has arrived, and he’s full-on terrifying in it.

The gritty drama stars Christian Bale as Russell, a steel mill worker whose Iraq vet brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) falls into the criminal underworld and eventually disappears. When the police fail to find Rodney, Russell sets out to discover the truth for himself. Check out the new video after the jump.

out-of-the-furnace-header-2

Crazy Heart director Scott Cooper returns this winter with Out of the Furnace, a crime thriller that features an all star cast including Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Woody HarrelsonForest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe, Zoë Saldana and Sam Shepard.

The first trailer made the film look great, and this new one outlines the story a bit better, so if you watch this you’ll start to know how brothers played by Bale and Affleck run afoul of a local criminal played by Harrelson, and how that sets up a conflict that will probably mess everyone up in the end. the-stand-header

Warner Bros. has been working on a new feature film version of Stephen King‘s giant apocalyptic novel The Stand, which was previously made into a televised mini-series. A few different writers and directors have been attached over the past couple years, with the most recent being Ben Affleck, but now the studio has settled on someone new.

Scott Cooper, who wrote and directed Crazy Heart and the upcoming Out of the Furnace (trailer here), is now in talks to direct and rewrite The Stand. Read More »

out-of-the-furnace-trailer-header

Here’s the trailer for Out of the Furnace, the new film from Crazy Heart director Scott Cooper. The film features Christian Bale as a Pennsylvania steelworker whose brother (Casey Affleck) gets in trouble with a backwoods but powerful criminal (Woody Harrelson). The rest of the supporting cast is impressive, with Zoe Saldana, Willem Dafoe, Forest Whitaker, and Sam Shepard playing big roles, all of which are given a few moments here.

This trailer is solid. In fact, just so long as you’re willing to have Pearl Jam’s ‘Release‘ in your head for the rest of the day, I think it’s a pretty terrific trailer, and one that will set the movie up as a must-see for a lot of people who might not have known what to expect before now.
