Scott Cooper‘s directorial career got off to a great start with Crazy Heart, a well-acted drama that scored Jeff Bridges an Oscar win. Cooper’s two films that followed, Out of the Furnace and Black Mass, were less successful with audiences and critics. The director’s recent gangster drama may have been a disappointment, despite Johnny Depp‘s often terrifying performance, but he still does have a way with actors. So it’s understandable that Out of the Furnace star Christian Bale (The Big Short) would want to work with him again for his latest project, Hostiles.

Johnny Depp looks like a ghost in Scott Cooper‘s Black Mass. Depp completely disappears into the role of Whitey Bulger, and while the actor’s physical and behavioral transformation is what makes him believable as one of Boston’s most notorious gangsters, the makeup certainly helps.
After the jump, find out how Black Mass makeup artists Gloria Casny and Joel Harlow turned Depp into Whitey Bulger.

Black Mass is one of the year’s more notable disappointments. It’s far from a bad movie, although Angie Han certainly made a case for why it is one. The Whitey Bulger (Johnny Depp) story is frustrating, because it has all the pieces to make for a great movie: an ensemble of excellent actors, a story loaded with potential, and a promising filmmaker at the helm. The end result is well made but hollow. Black Mass wasn’t a huge box-office or critical hit, either, but Warner Bros. still wants to stay in business with director Scott Cooper (Out of the Furnace). Learn more about Cooper’s potential next film with Warner Bros., White Knight, after the jump.

With gangsters, wigs, makeup, thick Boston accents, and a period setting, Black Mass was an opportunity for some actors to really act. Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, and Peter Sarsgaard, to name a few, gave very large performances. Sometimes they were grounded and human, sometimes they weren’t. Whatever the case, writer/director Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) put together an excellent cast, but one of the many fine actors initially involved didn’t make the final cut. Learn why Sienna Miller (Foxcatcher) was cut from Black Mass after the jump.

Last year, Warner Bros. got hold of a story called American Wolf. That’s the film concept based on a book proposal from a Texas Monthly editor that tells the story of a hunter who accidentally kills an endangered wolf while on a trip in Yellowstone. Leonardo DiCaprio’s company Appian Way, with Langley Park, picked up the rights last year, and Warner Bros. will release the eventual film. And now Scott Cooper (Out of the Furnace, seen above, Black Mass) is in talks to direct. Read More »
