Great Showdowns The Return

This contest is now closed. The answer was Upstream Color and the winners Christian K and Dan C have been contacted.

The answer to Friday’s contest was The Spectacular Now. The randomly selected winners were Lauren R and Robert Leo G.

Last year we gave away 10 copies of Scott Campbell’s book The Great Showdowns by debuting brand-new paintings based on our favorite films of all time. This year, we’re doing a sequel.

Today is your last day to win a copy of Scott Campbell‘s latest book, Great Showdowns: The Return. It’s a brand new collection of Campbell’s distinctive art depicting some of the greatest conflicts in movie history. We at /Film have been writing about Showdowns for years so, to commemorate and give away the new book, we once again teamed up with Campbell to do something very special.

The book is out today so, it’s our final day premiering a never before seen showdown. For the last four days we premiered showdowns for the favorite 2013 movie (so far) of one of five /Film writers: Peter Sciretta, Germain Lussier, Angie Han and David Chen. Today is your last chance and it’s based on Russ Fischer’s favorite 2013 movie (so far).

You’ll have one day to look at the showdown, read the explanation, and then e-mail in your guess. At the end of the day, two correct answers will randomly be selected and sent a free copy of The Great Showdowns: The Return by Scott Campbell.

Joel Phillips - Scorsese - header

Put Martin Scorsese up against any filmmaker and the native New Yorker has a fighting shot. Hawkes? Ford? Kubrick? Hitchcock? Spielberg? All legends, but Scorsese is undeniably in the same league. And this weekend marks one of the first full gallery shows specifically dedicated to his films.

Spoke Art has taken over New York’s Bold Hype Gallery for Scorsese: An Art Show Tribute, featuring work based on films such as Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, The Departed, Gangs of New York, Casino and many more. Artists such as Scott Campbell, Joshua Budich, Dave Perillo, Fernando Reza, Jayson Weidel, Jessica Deahl, Jon Smith, New Flesh, Paul Shipper, Rhys Cooper, Rich Pellegrino and Sam Smith have all contributed to the show, which is open Friday April 19 through Sunday April 21.

Check out a small sampling of the work below. Read More »

2013 seems to be the year of Oscar-themed pop culture art. Gallery 1988 did an amazing event, Mondo is preparing their own extravaganza and Scott Campbell has been adding to his Great Showdowns.

All this week leading up to the 85th Annual Academy Awards, Campbell has been immortalizing some of this year’s Best Picture nominees as Showdowns. And they are just too cool. That’s Argo above but, after the jump, see Beasts of the Southern Wild, Lincoln, Les Miserables and Django Unchained as only Scott C could do them. Read More »

Note: The answer to yesterday’s contest, (one of) Russ’s favorite movie(s), was Miller’s Crossing. The winners were Aaron N of California and Kevin P of Pennsylvania.
