Age of Ultron Defense

(Welcome to The Unpopular Opinion, a series where a writer goes to the defense of a much-maligned film or sets their sights on a movie seemingly beloved by all. In this edition: why Avengers: Age of Ultron is actually superior to the other Avengers films.)

What do we want from the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Do we merely want a collection of cool moments; the realization of decades upon decades of comic book splash pages brought to digital life on a big screen with booming surround sound? Do we want the joy of recognition; the giddiness that comes when a familiar easter egg appears and we knowingly elbow whomever we’re seeing the movie with, as if to say, “I recognize that; do you?” Or do we want something challenging? Something that takes the raw materials that make up the MCU and builds them up into something entirely unexpected?

Better yet – what if we could have all of those things, together? As it turns out, we did. It was called Avengers: Age of Ultron. And people weren’t happy about it.

black widow movie

Go back and read the interviews with director Joss Whedon in the weeks leading up to the release of 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and witness a man who was very happy to be getting out of the superhero movie game. Go back a little further and read the various set visit reports and witness a man who was exhausted and beat to hell by the process of making a $200 million spectacle. With those images fresh in your brain, it’s easy to imagine why Whedon says he’ll never direct a superhero movie again, especially since he can make perfectly entertaining low-budget Shakespeare adaptations in his backyard.

Still, there is one character who Whedon says could possibly pull him back into the Marvel fold: Black Widow. He may be done with Avengers movies, but Scarlet Johansson‘s Natasha Romanoff could be the thing that drags him back into the comic book movie business. Theoretically. Because there are currently no plans to make this movie.

Black Widow in Civil War

The last few Marvel movies have invested a good amount of time in building Natasha Romanoff’s (Scarlett Johansson) relationships with Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner). Captain America: The Winter Soldier, in particular, wisely made the film a bit of a two-hander between Rogers and Romanoff. In the trailer for Captain America: Civil War, it looks as if she’s turning her back on her two pals, but that’s not quite the case. Black Widow in Civil War, according to Scarlett Johansson, is a mediator.

Learn Romanoff’s motivation in the sequel after the jump.

Avengers Age of Ultron Fight Fathead

Three months from now, Avengers: Age of Ultron will be in our rear view window. It comes out May 1 in the United States, and as is the case with any big film, a few days later we’ll all have overanalyzed the crap out of it.

At the moment, many questions remain about the film. Some of those are about to be answered as another batch of marketing is hitting. The first TV spot was just released and now Marvel has released sixteen new photos from the film. Some were in Empire last week, and some showed up in the trailers, but there are some great new looks at the Hulk, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and more here.

Check out the new Avengers: Age of Ultron pictures here, as well as the Hulkbuster and Vision and some cool posters courtesy of Fathead. Read More »
