Well, EON Productions and Sam Mendes have a thing or two to learn from Peter Jackson, but here’s the first video blog for Skyfall, the twenty-third James Bond movie. Since Mendes and his crew aren’t building a whole world in the way that Peter Jackson did with Middle-Earth, it is probably unreasonable to expect ten-minute journeys through the film’s landscape. But this Skyfall blog, which is dedicated to Mendes’ affection for this particular incarnation of Bond, ends just as it is getting started. Check it out below regardless. Read More »

Time to tell that poolside image of Daniel Craig as James Bond: sorry, you’ve been disavowed. Early this morning 007.com revealed what EON Productions is calling the real first image of Daniel Craig as James Bond in the new film Skyfall, which is being directed right now by Sam Mendes and photographed by Roger Deakins.
That’s a hint of the new shot, above. Check out the full thing below. Read More »

Briefly: Sometimes I don’t know if EON Productions really gets the whole film promotion thing. Here’s the first official image from The Greg Louganis Story — oops, no, the first image from the 23rd James Bond film, Skyfall. It is much like one of the first images of Daniel Craig as Bond, released to promote Casino Royale several years ago. But now that we know Craig as Bond, couldn’t EON drop something more significant? I’m not sure this will even be satisfying to those who are mainly into the current Bond for the Daniel Craig beefcake factor, even though it is a good look at the actor’s impressive physique.

In the struggle between franchise and friend, in this instance, the friend was triumphant. You see, though the last several James Bond movies have all had different directors, those directors all employed the musical services of composer David Arnold. In fact, Arnold has been the composer for every Bond movie since 1997′s Tomorrow Never Dies. However, with the now in production Skyfall, Oscar-winner Sam Mendes is at the helm and instead of going with the franchise favorite, he’s hired his frequent collaborator Thomas Newman, who scored American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Jarhead and Revolutionary Road for the director. It’s been a couple years since the last Bond film, Quantum of Solace, and quite a few since the last good one, Casino Royale. Between that and the fact that 2012 is the 50th anniversary of the Bond film series, expect to see quite a bit of hubbub about the new Bond movie, Skyfall, as this year goes on.
The first salvo comes from the newly re-launched 007.com, which opens its doors with a short video offering a behind the scenes look at Skyfall. Or, more properly, this looks like it offers a behind the scenes look at the creation of the credit sequence for Skyfall. Check that out below, and as a bonus get the tiny nugget of info that Ralph Fiennes offered about his new Bond character. Read More »

How good is Daniel Craig in Skyfall? So good that producer Michael G. Wilson reportedly wants Craig to play James Bond for another five films, bringing him to a grand total of eight. (Even if the lackluster Quantum of Solace makes it seem as if he’s only done one so far, rather than two.) That would make Craig the longest-running Bond — if they can get him to sign. Read More »

Desmond Llewelyn may be the most famous face of gadget purveyor Q in the James Bond movies, but it is time for the new films to move on. Other actors have played Q as well; John Cleese perhaps being the other most memorable actor in the role for casual fans of the films. Cleese’s Q was the last seen, in the 2002 Die Another Day.
Now Sam Mendes is bringing the character back for the 23rd Bond film, Skyfall, and he’s turning to someone quite a bit younger than previous actors who’ve played the part: Ben Whishaw, who has been great in projects like Bright Star, Perfume, UK TV series The Hour, and Layer Cake. Read More »

Back when MGM’s financial woes put plans for Bond 23 on indefinite hiatus, director Sam Mendes signed on to direct a quick feature titled On Chesil Beach, based on a 2007 novella by Atonement author Ian McEwan. But now that those Bond issues have worked themselves out, Mendes is hard at work on Skyfall, and On Chesil Beach has fallen into the hands of another filmmaker. Mike Newell is now attached to helm the picture, an intimate drama about a young couple on their wedding night. More details after the jump.
